So I was having a discussion with a friend of mine and he was making the argument that breathing to one side was horrible technique and not good to do while swimming. I swim breathing on both sides but after and long time I start to lose breath and breath on one side. I feel my technique is good but need to breath this way to continue on. An feed back from you on tis subject. I don't feel he is right.
An excellent article by Coach Emmett Hines on the subject of breathing and how often to breathe can be found here: http://www.h2oustonswims.org/. Click the "Articles" button on the left and look for the article entitled "Breathe How Often?" I believe this will address your questions, and it comes from an authoritative source.

I totally agree with Coach Hines on this.
