I am on my 7th week of swimming. I am up to 4 times a week for 70 mins. I feel great. The inches are coming off and my endurance and strokes have improved.
But it seems I am always sore somewhere, whether it be my triceps, back, legs etc. I know I am overweight and getting into shape but boy there is not a day that goes by that I am not sore ( not in a bad way I don't think, other than my knees can be sore)
So those of you who have been swimming much longer than me, are you always sore to? Does this mean I am out of shape or just getting a good workout?
People who don't swim and hear that I am sore really don't believe me. I guess they think I am leisurely swimming the pool, not getting the awesome workout I am.
Cheers

I started swimming more intensly about a month ago and my back is sore sometimes. Nothing else, except maybe shoulders. However, I was was running a lot leading up to that point and was in good shape. Swimming just uses some different muscles. It seems to be better if I don't swim every day.:fish2:

What is the difference between muscle soreness, joint soreness, and delayed muscle soreness? I was completely baffled:confused: by the soreness on my shoulders that stick with me for about a month after I started swimming the day after Labor Day. I just couldn't tell which is which!?!
I was in Master's 20 years ago just for one year....I finally went back to swimming after I watched my girls attending meets the past year - I just couldn't wait to go back swimming. Sure enough, I went full board the first day! I was just too ecstastic :cheerleader: just to swim! I slowed down the fourth week and now I'm on the 7th week. I am feeling just muscle soreness everywhere not just my shoulders. But, I truly wonder about the first month, though.

I have been training for about 6 months now and I feel sore after each session. Sometimes I feel so sore it aches to lift my arms above my head. In fact, if I don't hurt, then it is only because I haven't worked hard enough in practice. Like art_z I have been doing about 20 - 25 000m a week.
So to answer your question: yes, it is just because you are getting a good workout.
Masochistically, I am disappointed if it doesn't hurt. There is something quite self-righteous and satisfying about aching muscles. While at work, I will sometimes lift my arms above my head just to remind myself of the pain! What a sicko I am.

Nope not me George. Everytime I swim I am sore somewhere else. Today it is the legs. OMG lots of kicking today. I guess I am more out of shape than I thought LOL

There are discussions elsewhere about what is safe and not so safe sore after exercises; thus, I'm very cautious about getting sore after workouts. I'll push myself harder each time I swim. :D

I can tell I am sore I think in a good way. My poor muscles are being pushed after years of nothing. It is all good. I am losing inches and my soreness each day reminds me that my swimming is working.

I always felt that with swimming it was MUSCLE soreness and not JOINT soreness....I figure muscles will recover.

That is a good way to put it. Though my knees do hurt. I have bad knees and am kicking from the knees instead of the entire leg. So I am really concentrating on that right now.
