Breaststroke and thunder thighs.

OK, my pants fit fine at the waist and hips, but too tight at the thigh area. Is it possible that my breaststroke made my thighs bigger? If so, how do I make them smaller (change my technique somehow?) and prevent it from happening in the future? Or is it a “Breaststroke curse”? :help: Thanks.

I think I'd recommend getting a doctor with more experience I'm not a medical professional so I didn't wan't to comment, but my immediate intuitive reaction was similar to Allen's.

2 fish We use fins sometimes and I really enjoy them. I bought the silicone ones off of kiefer. They are very comfortable. The only thing is you get the colour by foot size. I have a size 10 ladies so I got BRIGHT YELLOW FINS. Everyone in my masters group giggles. They think they suit me. I to have arthritis. Does it feel better after your legs are stronger? 2fish very funny LOL Katie Why not bright yellow? And did you know you can decorate them with sharpies........I guess that is more appealing if you are 12! I guess I should just order 2-3 different types/sizes and see which ones fit best. I've sen some people at my pool who wear socks with their flippers do adjust for the size, but i just don't like the idea of wet socks. As a matter of fact my joints have felt better since i dropped all land aerobics, so th eswimming is not agravating it. I'm the whale, my kids are the fish......:fish2::fish2: :wiggle:

I happen to be a *** stroke only swimmer and used to do upper body weight workouts as well. Until my anual exam that is! My Dr. had such a difficult time doing a proper *** exam because I had so much muscle build up over my chest and I was advised to stop lifting weights. But I have continued to swim the *** stroke for the past year, 5X week and was told at my recent check up that there is a lot less hard muscle. So maybe the same applies to the legs. If you are swimming a lot of breaststroke, you might wan't to cut back on weight work outs for the legs. Vary your swims with the bike or running, just to hit different parts of the legs- and butt! :mooning:

Hey Cathlaur- I too, had knee pain when I started swimming again about 2.5 years ago....now, most of the pain is gone, only a twinge now and then. I suspect that I had weak hamstrings and all the flutter and dolphin kicking strengthened them. As for weight loss, I did not lose any the first 2 years, although I went down a dress size. Now I've made a concerted effort to really cut back on my calories (mainly carbs), and have slowly managed to lose almost 25 lbs since this summer. I still want to lose another 20. I had hoped my times would get faster (since there is less to drag around) but I've not seen that effect yet. I swim mainly for fitness, 3 to 4 times per week...weekdays I don't have time for more than 2500, but saturday practices usually we swim at least 4000 yards. Good luck with your swimming and the worst of the soreness will pass.

Thanks mightyminnow. I am really trying to watch what I eat. Portion size is a huge thing for me. I just plain eat tooooooooo much. I am starving half the time but it is getting better. I think that the muscles around my knees need to get stronger as well. It is good to hear from someone who has had things change for the better with regards to knee pain. Congrats on losing 25 pounds that is awesome. I am sure you will get the last 20 off. The inches sure are nice to Katie
  • No, not the *** stroke ones...the last thing I need to work on is my kick there.......I was thinking regular zoomers, just to be able to do a different kick ......Sorry to hear about the busted knees,at one time I had considered getting the special BS fins, but came up with a better way of improving my BS kick....I've got arthritis in both my knee and ankle and would hate to make it worse..... I have the Zoomers and like them. They take some getting used to if you are used to the long fins. Get blue if your ankles aren't very flexible, red if they are. Alison
  • I was a breaststroker during my short age-group career (ages 12-14) and always had huge quads. You figure *** kicking is like doing leg extension after leg extension so it's going to build up those muscles. Even now that I do very little *** kicking, I still have large quads. I think a large part of it is genetic and related to how easily you build muscle. If you are happy with your leaner, more muscular self, that is what counts!! :) Congrats on the continuing weight loss, Katie! I remember reading somewhere that a 10% reduction in body weight provides a 90% reduction in knee pain. Maybe it wasn't quite 90%, but it was some very high number...

Allen we have done that drill to. It is great. 2fish I don't have to wear socks with my fins. I even ordered them off line and I got the right size. They are great. I was working out and swimming I have had to pull back on the working out. I am only in my 7th week swimming and am up to 4 times a week. I was too sore and I really still need the recovery days. I do try to get out on my bike but that will change as the weather does. The swimming still bothers my knees. But as I know what is wrong with them and I am not doing anymore damage I just ignore them. Of course that may not happen later on in life. I know I am going to have knee replacements but knowing I can still swim after those is very comforting. In the meantime I need to drop some weight. It is slowly coming off so that is all good Katie
