Women's Locker Room

Here's a thread for the ladies to discuss anything that relates to women and swimming. For example, feel free to discuss how disgustingly ugly fastskins are, how the "curse" can kill a meet, how suits don't fit, how swimming wrecks your hair, how hormones unhinge you, etc.
  • Please tell me this 12 year old was not with OCCS. Not with OCCS! My other shocking rumor/gossip was an 11-12 year old (now 13) who was a bit small and her parents (doctor/lawyer) put her on HGH so she would be taller etc. for sports. The kid was complaining about injections. Blech. Hope that one's false.

Why can't some parents accept their kids the way they were intended to be?
  • That is totally sad. What if girl is not good at "tall people" sports but very good at gymnastics or ballet, which rewards the smaller, lighter body? Those late growth spurts can be awesome. VB
  • It goes both ways! I hit 6' as 12 years. I always wanted to do gymnastics, but knew it was not a pretty uneven parallel bars with my legs waaaaaay to long. (I guess its a good thing you can't fix being tall - though it took me another 8 years to realize it). :fish2:
  • LOL! I expected to hit 5 ft 9, having a sister almost 6 ft, and spent the next 20 years fuming over being "short" when I stopped 2 inches below expectations. The bar for giving hormones to affect height should be much higher than desire to participate in a particular sport. That's as bad as kittens doing pushups. :blah: VB

Fort My youngest daughter was in the lower 10% of the growth range when she was 6 years old. We went to McMaster Medical center. They measured her from head to toe. The Doctor suggested some growth hormones but we decided to wait and see. But when she was 14 she started a growth spurt without any medication. She is now 5', 9.5".

We hosted an Italian foreign exchange student several years ago whose parents sent his HGH over from Italy. He wasn't really small, maybe 35th-45th percentile. At the time he was 17 or 18 so they were probably just wasting their money. His epiphyseal plates had probably already fused. Skip

As if the Dara thread weren't enough ... Heard some interesting gossip at an age group meet about an extremely fast 12 year old. Seems that Mom and coach are considering putting her on birth control pills to prevent the appearance of AF, so she can keep going great guns and not have any plateaus. What next?! BCP don't stop AF, they regulate it and hormones. I wouldn't do this to a child of mine, as everyone responds differently to BCP. They would help a swimmer to know when to expect AF, which could be helpful for meet planning. Of course, being 47 and finding AF less regular than it was 10 years ago makes that look much more appealing, but I don't do well on BCP, so it's not an option for me. --mj This is ridiculous and makes as much sense and making a 12 year old boy wear boxing gloves to bed so he won't waste his energy, and thus save it for swimming! To me that's almost as bad as PED...don't mess with nature.
  • I have a new question for the women. I searched but didn't find any guidance on this topic. I am having a miserable time with razor burn in my bikini area. I soak in the tub for over an hour and then shave with a new razor with shaving cream. And still it hurts, is red and furious and I am getting itchy sore bumps. Can we discuss the merits of waxing vs shaving vs what else is there? I am seriously considering buying one of those technical suits with shorty legs (which I absolutely do not need) just to escape the horror of depilation. Willow But I think some of the men will be paying close attention to the responses to this particular issue.
