When swimming, should the fingers be close together so they cup the water and no water gets between them or should they be a little looser with water allowed to squeeze between them on the stroke?

OK. Glad I got that straightened out. Until recently, I thought I was supposed to try to cup my hand as not let any water squeeze through, and it was hard to do. Glad I don't have to worry about that now.

If cuppin were the way to go rather than a combination of pulling pushing and bit of slippage (sculling), fast modern ships would be wheel-paddlers rather than screw-propelled.
Can't remember where ( or when ) I read that.
