What makes them think she didn't see it? Was she supposed to stop swimming and scream or something? If you swim open water in clear water I imagine you get pretty acclimated to swimming with marine life of all sizes.
What I found amazing is that the Ray had Lap Swimming etiquette down pat too. They passed on each other's left... :D
Aha, that's it! They realized the swimmer and the ray didn't see each other because otherwise the swimmer would have stopped and asked the ray whether it wanted to circle-swim or split the lane :)
How did she not see it?! I would have freaked out! Although I have read that they are harmless to people, and have the biggest brains of any fish. But still.

There are some weird things underwater and it is a good thing not to see them. A friend snorkelling off Boca De Iguana met face to face with Poncho the 14 foot croc. He swam away from it and got behind some rocks. There he found a baby whale and a couple of minutes later the baby whales mother appeared. He left the water in a hurry.
