Actually it was the US Military who "created" the internet when they started to connect their various commands and installation via computer. The real boost was when a university (I don't remember right now) allowed access to their library system. That made the Net 3D by layering civilians systems on the military backbone. Private business took it from there. From stem cell research to a cure for cancer, its businesses that makes real progress; not governments, especially congress. Voting "yes" to appropiate funds is not the same as creating it. BTW it was a civilian contracted firm that started it for the military. Wait are you saying you invented the internet now? As for the alleged "cheesy TV dramas"... When an episode of Walker Texas Ranger was aired in France, the French surrendered to Chuck Norris just to be on the safe side.
