I say go for it! I'm about to take on a five mile swim and I could easily be the last to finish. And if I finish, no matter what my place or time, I'll be as proud as the person coming in first.
I've done meets and been had for breakfast by women in their seventies! But as my first swim coach always wrote on his workout sheets, "Do the best that you can do. Don't worry about what others are doing."
