Have any of you done this event before? I am planning to attempt this distance for the first time next week. Any advice or suggestions on how to swim this? The longest I've done before this is 5K.

To fully answer your question, I would break this up into more manageable distances, as that will help you keep track.
50x100 will bore you to death, but it works.
I would end up doing something like breaking it up by 1000, doing something like:
#1 - warmup, 4/3/2/1
#2 - free pace set (ie 10x100)
#3 - kick (ie 400 4-position kick, 12x50 desc 1-4, 5-8, 9-12)
#4 - something IMish
#5 - 500 of something exciting, 500 w/d
