This news should have it's own thread.
She split the race 7:51.06, 7:51.48. Not bad :)
Since I plan to swim the 1500 at the same pool later this summer I'm hoping some of her magic is still in the water. However, I'll be satisfied with a time with 2:30 of hers.
www.timedfinals.com has a video up of the last 200.I love the fact that she did this without any competition alongside her.
Did you see that kick on the last 50? Wow.
From about the middle of the race on, there was a deafening wave of sound that followed her from one end of the pool to the other. Almost like "the wave" at a sporting event. But way better and more electric. I was only a few feet from the official when the bell sounded for the final lap, but I couldn't hear it!
I wonder how much the crowd helped her. I saw Michael Phelps set a WR in the 200 Fly back in February. We could see his splits on the scoreboard and at each 50 the announcer read the WR splits. At the final turn, he was behind WR pace but not by much. The entire crowd jumped to its feet and screamed as he swam the last length.
Afterward, in an interview, he said that he could hear the crowd and he knew that there was "something" going on.
She had a great meet setting PR's in the 200 and 400 as well. Too bad the 1500 is not an Olympic event for women but glad that we can keep the 1500 record in the US. What's interesting to me is it looked like she had the long FS Pro on. I have always only seen her racing in the regular recordbreaker suit.
Great swim! I'm thrilled for her!!
This is the first time I've seen her wear an FS Pro too. I've only seen her wear the recordbreaker or knee skin ... Nice endorsement for the Pro ...
How freaky is it that her first and last 50's were within 4/100ths.
I don't know this and am too lazy to look it up: what records does Janet still have on the books?
She still has the world record in the 800 meter freestyle and the American record in the 400 meter freestyle. I think that Kate will get that 800 free record by Beijing and that Kate or Katie Hoff have a good shot at that 400 record by next summer as well.
I'll repeat part of what I said in another Kate-related thread:
I seriously doubt she was broken down. She went 11 seconds slower at worlds, when she was supposedly tapered. The mile will be offered for women at nationals this summer, but I would imagine training for the mile will help her 800 next year.
I hope someone got video of this and is putting it on YouTube. Next to Phelps' 200 free at worlds, this might be the performance of the year.
Wonder how Janet's taking the news.
That is a staggering swim! That 29.2 split on the end was, apparently, the fastest final 50 for anyone--men included. Heck, if I could split that on the final 50 of a SCY 1650 I'd be ecstatic!
That time would easily qualify Ziegler for Olympic Trials in the men's 1500! The only other woman who is faster than a men's US Trials cut is Liesel Jones in the 200 *** (2:20.54, with the cut being 2:20.79).
