Thomas, it does seem kind of odd, and I can certainly sympathize with you, as I was in that boat a few short years ago. But let me give you a few topics to ponder in relation to this issue.
As a perk to turning 25, you not only get a huge discount on your car insurance and are more easily able to rent cars, but you now also get to compete in international masters swim meets.:bouncing:
In many countries across the globe, a term of military service is mandatory. For the most part, this needs to occur ~18-25 - right in the age group in question. :duel:
FINA may be assuming that most of the 18-24 age group would have an unfair disadvantage of being a poor college student, or struggling young professional barely making ends meet (and therefore not able to attend meets like this). :notworking:
FINA may wish to try to exclude current/very recent NCAA swimmers from Masters competitions. :fish2:
Since the name "Masters" is tied to this, perhaps 18-24 is just too young to be considered "masters." :yawn:My thought is that the world has so many different viewpoints of a person's age that this last hypothetical seems to make the most sense to me.
do you know why fina wont let people under 25 swim? is there anything we can do to try to change that? thank you!
FINA Masters rules are set by the FINA Masters Congress and approved by the FINA Bureau (Board of Directors). Each country has the right to send 2 representative to the FINA Congress where the all proposed legislation is voted on. The Congress meets every four years.
All federations are invited to send proposed changes the year before the Congress - the next congress will be in 2010. Proposals will be submitted in 2009.
As part of an international governing body, we make our proposals, unfortunatly we do not always get what we propose. As a side note, the differnent disciplines have different age group limits. Synchro is 20 on 31 December, Divinig is 25, Water Polo is 30.

As a reminder the entry deadline for the A.S.U.A Pan American Masters Swimming Championships is fast approaching (August 20th).
I hope to see many of the forumites there!:party2::wave:
Maybe I’ll find a new avatar in San Juan.
