I've heard that in any case it's not a good idea to wear a watch in OW swims b/c it can look like something a shark might want to chase. That and it's kind of hard to check a watch anyway in those conditions. I didn't wear watches in pool races b/c I figured someone was doing the time keeping anyway and looking at a watch would just be another distraction.
