When I was pregnant with Patrick (Jr.) now 7, I asked my coach, Kerry, if there was much information on competitive swimming and training while pregnant. He didn't know of any. Since then I've had two more kids (now 3 and 4) and there's still nothing really about this subject.
So I'll use myself as a guinea pig, and maybe it will help others in the future...
This will be our last, and with this one, I'd like to have goals, unlike with the other three. Obviously, my number one goal is to have a healthy baby. My nutrition is key here, for the baby and myself. Sleep is crucial for me, so that too is a goal. Other goals are lifting, and minimum weight gain (I still have 20 from last time, mostly in my stomach!) and to swim in Austin and be somewhat competitive. My due date is January 20, 2008.
I'm afraid I will be put on bed rest near the end, because Carrick (3) was born 5 weeks early, and we don't know why. He spent 2 weeks in the Intensive Care, and is fine now. I read that the odds have gone up significantly for me now to have another early delivery. (With all of my other deliveries, by C-section, I swam the day I delivered and was back in the water two weeks later.)
Tomorrow, I will be 4 weeks pregnant. And while I swam Saturday (2,000 SCM- see Rude Noodlers thread) I didn't get to do the only practice today (Memorial Day) at 8:30am because Brenna (4) was still sleeping...
I have some questions, and I hope you will all pitch in your :2cents: Sorry, I don't make change :p
How do I modify weight lifting while pregnant?
Anybody do OW swims while pregnant (water temps around 70)?
Thanks!
Finnian Jack Duggan weighed in at 9 pounds, 13 ounces and was 19.5 inches long! He is absolutely adorable, but I may be biased. He is a really mellow guy and is calmed easily with just soft words and lots of smooches. So far he's kept his weight on. There was concern early on about his blood sugar levels and thoughts that he may be admitted to the ICN. Luckily, with some formula, his numbers came up and we avoided it :) Huge relief.
We had always leaned toward Finnian but were thinking Sean Finninan... anyway Pat had mentioned Finnian Jack awhile ago and I said, "It sounds like a drink! Yea, give me a shot of Finnian Jack." He mentioned it again and I gave it some thought and it kinda grew on me. Uncle Jack is Pat's uncle. I never got to meet him, but he was very close to Pat's mom.
We came home early yesterday afternoon. It's so nice to be home. The kids and Pat decorated the house with balloons and cards. Very cute. Mom and baby are doing very well.
The storm I mentioned in the last entry was much worse than anyone thought so Pat and I skipped swimming Friday morning. Winds were up in the 70-80mph range, tons of rain, etc. I talked to Kerry last night and he said that practices were "interesting" that day. I can't believe he stood out in that weather! Wow. Talk about dedication. Swimming and coaching are completely different animals in that kind of weather, with the coach being the stud!
Finnian goes for his checkup this Friday and I go a week from Friday. I'm hoping the doc will say go ahead and swim, just as he did in the past. I'm totally up and around, even cleaning some (Pat's parents come tonight) and I feel great. My stomach is still immense thanks to the C-section and all of the gas build up! It seems to be going down pretty quickly, but I don't remember this much gas build up- I still look 6 months pregnant!
Hopefully, we'll get pictures loaded sometime today. And I'm already having swim meet thoughts the end of January. The road to recovery is much easier when it has goals :agree:
