Karen's pregnant blog

When I was pregnant with Patrick (Jr.) now 7, I asked my coach, Kerry, if there was much information on competitive swimming and training while pregnant. He didn't know of any. Since then I've had two more kids (now 3 and 4) and there's still nothing really about this subject. So I'll use myself as a guinea pig, and maybe it will help others in the future... This will be our last, and with this one, I'd like to have goals, unlike with the other three. Obviously, my number one goal is to have a healthy baby. My nutrition is key here, for the baby and myself. Sleep is crucial for me, so that too is a goal. Other goals are lifting, and minimum weight gain (I still have 20 from last time, mostly in my stomach!) and to swim in Austin and be somewhat competitive. My due date is January 20, 2008. I'm afraid I will be put on bed rest near the end, because Carrick (3) was born 5 weeks early, and we don't know why. He spent 2 weeks in the Intensive Care, and is fine now. I read that the odds have gone up significantly for me now to have another early delivery. (With all of my other deliveries, by C-section, I swam the day I delivered and was back in the water two weeks later.) Tomorrow, I will be 4 weeks pregnant. And while I swam Saturday (2,000 SCM- see Rude Noodlers thread) I didn't get to do the only practice today (Memorial Day) at 8:30am because Brenna (4) was still sleeping... I have some questions, and I hope you will all pitch in your :2cents: Sorry, I don't make change :p How do I modify weight lifting while pregnant? Anybody do OW swims while pregnant (water temps around 70)? Thanks!

  • Flaky, flaky blog! It's now over one month since an update... Swam Labor Day and did a whopping 3,650 (for me it was whopping). Then swam the next day and did 1,700. Took 10 days off and swam last Saturday 9/15 and did 3,000y. I also swam this morning before work and got in 1,800. All in all not ideal. With the weight gain and swimming so inconsistently it's getting harder to swim. I've also been having a lot of pain in my stomach (out of the water)- I think because it's getting SOOOO big. Flip turns hurt for the first few hundred, but then things loosen up a little bit and I'm fine. My teammates find my turns most humorous. Leianne Crittenden got quite the chuckle out of my "slo-mo and wide knee flip turns"! I don't like getting creamed off my turns :shakeshead: I'd like to be swimming more but school started again and I'm finding myself having to choose between family time and swim time... I'll almost always choose family time. I'm still in my 38 Speedo water polo zip up suit at 24 weeks (end of 6 months). I imagine I'll jump up to a 40 in the next month or so. BTW, my breaststroke fins came and I'm in love!!! They are awesome. A lot of people at practice (breaststrokers and heathens) have tried them and really like them too. They really help to narrow my kick- I had lost that feeling of a proper kick and I'm so excited to get it back again. I've noticed when I take them off my feet are FAST. I really have to turn over my hands to keep up. It's great :cheerleader: Don't know if I'll swim much the rest of the week or next as Pat was just approved for the first K9 at his department. He's going to trainings and to Riverside to pick up the dog next week. He's beside himself with excitement. He's waited 13 years for the PD to get a dog! He's been running and swimming about 2x/week...
