Karen's pregnant blog

When I was pregnant with Patrick (Jr.) now 7, I asked my coach, Kerry, if there was much information on competitive swimming and training while pregnant. He didn't know of any. Since then I've had two more kids (now 3 and 4) and there's still nothing really about this subject. So I'll use myself as a guinea pig, and maybe it will help others in the future... This will be our last, and with this one, I'd like to have goals, unlike with the other three. Obviously, my number one goal is to have a healthy baby. My nutrition is key here, for the baby and myself. Sleep is crucial for me, so that too is a goal. Other goals are lifting, and minimum weight gain (I still have 20 from last time, mostly in my stomach!) and to swim in Austin and be somewhat competitive. My due date is January 20, 2008. I'm afraid I will be put on bed rest near the end, because Carrick (3) was born 5 weeks early, and we don't know why. He spent 2 weeks in the Intensive Care, and is fine now. I read that the odds have gone up significantly for me now to have another early delivery. (With all of my other deliveries, by C-section, I swam the day I delivered and was back in the water two weeks later.) Tomorrow, I will be 4 weeks pregnant. And while I swam Saturday (2,000 SCM- see Rude Noodlers thread) I didn't get to do the only practice today (Memorial Day) at 8:30am because Brenna (4) was still sleeping... I have some questions, and I hope you will all pitch in your :2cents: Sorry, I don't make change :p How do I modify weight lifting while pregnant? Anybody do OW swims while pregnant (water temps around 70)? Thanks!

  • I swam on Monday for the first time in weeks. I did 2,500 LCM. Was I pooped! I warmed up 300 (as I had to chat with all of the people I've been missing) and then we did 6 x 50 on :55 stroke drill stuff. The main set was 12 x 100 + 50. 1-6 the 100s were on 1:35 and the 50s on :55. The goal for "normal" people was to work on pacing and then on the 50s to descend to 200 race pace. Alas, I am not normal these days. I was just happy to make the set. My best 100 was 1:19 and my best 50 (back) was :47. Surely nothing to write home about... however, I'm just happy I went. I will always remember an article Bill V. wrote years ago about "time in the water". That's my philosophy these days, just get in the water. We were finished about 8:15 pm and then I chatted some more until 8:45 with Gene Hart, Kerry, and Neil Fisher (who was visiting from Chico, a couple hours north of WC). It was nice to hang out again :) Notes aside I did not swim Tuesday as we took the kids to the beach (BRRRRR 64 degrees) it was over 90 at our house when we left. We got home about 8:45 pm. Brenna (4) has her first meet ever tomorrow. It's the last one of the season and she's signed up to swim 25 back and 25 free. I can't wait. We'll videotape it (if she actually does it, she's really scared!) and if someone can tell me how to put it up here, I will. :drink: (have one for me!!!) Weight gain: holding steady at 10 pound gain at week 15 1/2.
