My preferred stroke is the backstroke. However I seem to have a problem: I cannot seem to do a decent underwater back dolphin off the wall. Can anybodu suggest some drills or ideas?

  • Consider using a nose plug. You will be able to keep your air while underwater on your back and avoid the nasal flush. You will be able to stay under longer. Also I count out the kicks, I am up to 10 off the start, 8 off the turns for 50-100's and six for the 200. the kicks are timed with my first armstrokes, I always do it the same way, right arm first as that is the bottom hand on my streamline (or the top hand on the front strokes). Try to think of yourself in a cylinder, long and streamlined, and don't kick bigger than the cylinder. Use a short rapid kick from your abdomen, feet together, then I try to transition into a couple of hard flutter kicks at the breakout so I don't stop kicking. I had work up to this, you might try just doing three or four kicks each turn til you are more comfortable.
