Oh my toe...

Oh here's my sad story... 3 weeks ago I fell and hurt my big toe really bad. It was not broken but the bone was badly bruised. So, the doc said the pain will go away in about 6 WEEKS!!!!! Also he said that I can swim but very carefully after the cut (got a chunk of the meat out) heels. (I can point the toe but it can not be curled due to incredible pain) So, here are my questions: 1. Since I mostly swim breaststroke will it mess up the toe, if so, what stroke is better? 2. The cut is dry but after taking a shower it gets nasty looking, should I protect it with the band aid and a sock when swimming? 3. Been out of water for 3 weeks.... have a lessons tomorrow, should I skip a lesson and practice myself, or is it better to start again under my instructor's eye? 4. Any good remedies for hurtie toes? :) Thank you all so much, I appreciate your help!

I don't see any harm in swimming with a bruised toe as long as it does not bring about significant pain. I have broken a toe twice in the 2.5 years I have been swimming and neither time did I stay out of the pool. There were a couple times where I screamed underwater after a turn/pushoff and had pressured my toe on the wall, but that was peanuts compared to the sensation that came when I broke it! As for the cut/wound I think it's important to keep it dry. I don't think there is much harm in swimming with it at this point but it needs to be kept dry at all other times. It's not actually an open wound that is bleeding right? You are not leaving a red trail down the pool as you swim to and fro?

  • Gedrick, I say if you WANT to give it a try, and find that you CAN do it without injuring yourself further, then you should give it a whirl. If you swim poorly, you know you tried hard, did your best, and that was what you were destined to do. If you are truly concerned about injuring yourself further, then I say stay out. Maybe do some pull work with a bouy to limit the use of your leg; maybe barely push off the wall so you end up swimming most of the length instead of streamlining to build up your stamina; maybe now is a good time to work on your freestyle If you do go for it, you may surprise yourself with how well you end up swimming. Just ask the guy who went a 1:12 in the 100 free at 05 lcm nats... in a full arm cast. oh wait, that was me. :dedhorse:
