Does anyone else suffer from oxygen debt after tumble turn?
Former Member
This is not the least of my worries in swimming, but I tend to fall into oxygen debt after tumble turns. In fact, when I keep doing tumble turns in lap swims, it is less taxing to swim 50 LCM than 25 SCY, because I have more time in 50 LCM to recover from the oxygen debt, whereas in 25 SCY, I have to do another tumble turn and fall, yet again, into oxygen debt, before fully recovering from the previous bout.
Do other master swimmers out there suffer from a similar problem? How do you over come this?

I'm not sure how you are breathing before your flip, but try timing it out so you take one breath right before your flip, that usually gives me enough to flip, streamline and take a couple strokes before needing another breath.

I think it's a very common problem. Recently I've been working on not breathing on the first stroke as I come off the wall, which is still hard for me when I'm tired. I believe with time you can condition yourself to tolerate it more easily. I also think hypoxic sets are helpful--say pulling a 400 with a 3/5/3/7 breathing pattern (by 50 or 100).
