Amanda Beard in Playboy

Swiminfo.com has released a post saying that Amanda Beard will be on the cover of the July issue for Playboy. How do you think this will effect her image among the swimming communties? Will any of us purchase this issue because of her?
  • After wading through many pages...I for one, am reeling with relief to learn that George had not posed nude (especially not with the 'come hither' look). Although it's surprising he doesn't have a story about how his suit came off during a marathon swim or something! :)
  • Well said, Barb. I'm still in a state of diminished humanity from viewing George's swimsuit spread. Remember the thong-suit from Borat? Me too!! I've got that suit in my inbox. Quite a sight. I would wager that both Amanda and her parents are well prepared for any negative publicity. There are way more than "a few" that will disapprove of what she's done. (This is the US, not Europe or Australia.) Thus, I suspect Amanda is prepared to ignore them and that her own peer group and friends may be more tolerant. (I've heard many college kids say that all that matters in college is how you look naked.) Of course, trying to prepare yourself in advance and hearing the-after-the-fact disapproval are different things. Having suffered some sexist BS and "dumb blond" treatment myself, I wouldn't want to be subjected to it.

One of the most odd things I ever have had to do is explain to a neighbor why I thought it was inappropriate for him to be showing Playboy to two 14 yr old boyas. One was his son, one wasn't. Both of course knew what Playboy was & had probably seen it before. Exploitation of the nude body is exploitation of the nude body. It doesn't matter what the motivation of the person posing is in the matter.

I hope that neither of Amanda's parents google into this thread. Regardless of how they feel about her baring all for the masses, hearing their daughter called all sorts of unsavory names would have to hurt. I cannot imagine anything my daughter would do which would change the way I love her. Criticizing or supporting her choice, speculating about her future, damning or defending the medium have been good discussions. I think the name calling, however, disregards her humanity and diminishes ours.

Barb if they look at my posts they will not find anything bad said. I just hope they don't see me in my new racing suit.
  • No I did not tell about that - reason - modesty. Did anyone notice that Swim Stud has almost as many posts as Fortress who will get to 3000 first? Well, I probably will if I have to keep discussing parenting with you! It's "just amazing" that you now fess up to being "modest" after ragging on me ... and I was sure you had posed ... ;) :mooning: As I said earlier, I think the "S" letter is undeserved. Amanda is a dedicated athlete, after all, and what she did was not illegal. It was a personal choice. But I did see this morning that Paris Hilton was sentenced to jail for 45 days for driving with a suspended license. The suspension was for drunk driving. I can't say I'm crying at the thought of her being a jailbird. To me, she is a much worse role model.
  • They should show more of the consequence's of Paris's actions, jail time. I seem to remember a swimmer who avoided jail time. My wife has been telling me that I should stop wearing my speedo she says it is not appropriate. Chuckie wants me to wear swim shorts, but I hate the pockets filling with air and causing drag. I sent Peter pictures of me in my new swim suit racing suit, but I think they were sent back, his anti virus rejected them??? I don't mind the old speedos, but no teenage boy seems to want to wear them. Paris avoided jail time just like Phelps when she was charged with drunk driving. She's going to jail now for repeatedly flouting court orders and driving with a suspended license when she was on probation.

Oh, I'm sure they're prepared. And she's prepared. It's still can't be nice to hear someone calling your little girl a - fill-in-the-blank. I'm still reeling from Borat as well.
  • I just googled and this forum thread was the second hit! :-o Just shows to go you that if you want a lot of free press just do something controversial. CHOICE ... Ha, ha. Well, you forgot to say that Timed Finals was the first hit! Some of the comments over there were quite interesting too. Before the big announcement, they had just named her to their "Top 5 Most Appealing Swimmers."
