Doug Strong, age 82, swam the 200 fly in around the 10 minute range. For the last 50 yards he was the only swimmer in the water and everyone in the pool started cheering him on every time he breathed for the last probably 10-15 yards. It was great to see. Obviously Doug wasn't moving very fast, but he was moving and he kept it going till he hit that wall.
The downer is Doug got DQed. I give him an A for effort regardless!
Thats a shame he was dq'd. I bet it was awe-inspiring. I remember a simillar moment in Savannah when an older man did the 200 fly. We were all giving him a standing ovation when to our surprise he pushed off after the 200 and was heading into an extra 50! Nadine Day dove in to stop him. He was all smiles and said he enjoyed everyone clapping so much that he didn't want his race to stop!! I LOVE MASTERS SWIMMERS! THEY ARE THE BEST PEOPLE IN THE WOELD!!
