The little things that make me smile at Swim Meets...

...Hearing everyone behind and around the blocks go "Oooooh!" and then chuckle after seeing or even just hearing someone belly flop their dive LOL
  • Watching a 96 year old dive in off the blocks (yep, you read that phrase right) at 98 LCNats and swim an all-out 50 free. Talk about inspiring... When a swimmer on our team proprosed to his girlfriend (also a swimmer on our team) by sneaking a red "Will you marry me" sheet into the heat sheets at a meet, then patiently waiting for her to find the page!!! She said yes, by the way... Oh, and he worked with the meet director ahead of time, so EVERYONE's program had that sheet in it. It was really too cool. :)
  • Awwww :) That's so sweet! (no sarcasm intended-for real)
  • How the water feels right after you shave down.:groovy:
  • ... watching your dad compete in the 50 free at 04 Nationals just so you can say you both competed. ... watching your sister swim the 400 IM and laughing hysterically at her *** stroke which sems to go backwards some how  (if any of you swim with her in Atlanta, you know what I mean) ...any team mate of fellow swimmer who cheers for me. .... watching a 93 year old woman compete. Her daughter stands behind her and yells "go ma!" when the start beep goes off. And then she dives in and gives it her all. OMS swimmers know who I'm talking about. ... hearing a grunt here and there while cheering for someone during a long event - 400 IM, 200 fly, etc My son just turned 2 and doesn't quite get the "cheer for mommy" idea but I bet the first time I near "go mommy" I will nearly drown from smiling so much. Alison
  • Didn't you just swim the 200 fly? And which "team" are you referring to, you compulsive overtrainer? On a serious note, being there for people's bad swims to cheer them up after is real important!! So when I sob hysterically after my next botched backstroke finish, you better hold my hand. ;) No, wait ... it happens so often, I just laugh. LOL. Fort, I will always be there for you but I can't sit with you while you sob if I'm in the next heat...the one you should be in ;) I want to learn how to move my arms fast like you do when you sprint! I do consider people on both teams as my teammates. Yes, I did swim the 200 fly in Feb, and laughed the whole time so I guess that's something that makes me smile. But it's more fun to watch real flyers do the 200 fly. I admire the fact that they can keep their arms going at the same rate the whole time.
  • Fort, I will always be there for you but I can't sit with you while you sob if I'm in the next heat...the one you should be in ;) I want to learn how to move my arms fast like you do when you sprint! I do consider people on both teams as my teammates. Thank god. Now I can stop sobbing on my keyboard since I'm a real teammate. If you really loved me and I was sobbing, you should give up that 50 back to hold my hand! You're not even a sprinter anyway. But if you want to learn to move your arms fast, you have to get therapy for your engine building addiction and start doing 25s, sista. I might swim the 50 back at Muppet's meet on July 1. Re-match in the same heat? Oh no, I don't get a turn .... only a start? That could be ugly... So as not to hijack, I will add that I smile ... when I realize I failed to shave my hairy legs. But who cares? ... when I watch my teammate reading the newspaper between events. (How does he do that? I'm busy chatting and drinking coffee.) ... when my coach swims 2 relays with me after she's been blowing chow all night. ... when my daughter tells her swim coach my times without serious derision. ... when my daughter fixes my leaky broken goggles because I can't see them too well. ... while I ponder which event to scratch that day.

'Course, if you have been swimming masters for over twenty years, having some kid at an away meet yell 'Go Daddy' can give you the willies...

Team mates teasing each other about breaking each other's team records. Anchoring a relay against a 24 year-old (whose 50 is as fast as your 25) and having team mates say, "You would have had him if you had another 50." Swimming a PB when I'm having a bad meet. Finishing a 100 fly! (Ok, I'm a whimp. I think a 50 fly is perfect.)

comparing "guns" ... I understand you are not reffering to firearms, but this reminds me of the thread years ago where a swimmer was arguing their reasoning for bringing a gun to swim practice. I might have to go back and find that one for old times sake. LOL!

Your "Anchoring a relay....." remark makes me smile. Swimming the 500 against a 24 yr old, who is smaller than one of my legs, and thinking.... Well I had her at the 25 yd mark.
