Don't have much meet experience. Going to the yonkers meet next weekend.
If I swim a 200 free first event, then a 50, will it ruin my 100 free if I want a PB in the 100 free? Assume 20 minutes between the 200 and 50 and 30 minutes between the 50 and 100.
Skip the 50. Warm down until you feel recovered from the 200, then warm down a little more. I agree that it's important to keep moving in warm down. If your muscles aren't being used, the lactic acid will continue to gather.
Drink lots of fluids. It will help flush out the lactate.
The 200 could be a good warmup for the 100.
Good luck.
One more thing,be sure and even pace or negative split your 200. It will not only probably give you a better time for the 200 it will make it easier to recover from(that lactic acid again.)I'd swim the 200(not the 50) as I tend to swim my second event faster than my first(more warmed up and more comfortable with the pool I suppose.)
Good move.
I meant to get back to you with my take on opening with a 200, which I did last weekend. Our Association meet was in Bend, elevation around 3,300 feet; I train at sea level. I didn't think the altitude would be a big deal, but it was (or at least that's my excuse).
I was looking for a 2 minute and small change 200 based on my best SCM time of a 2:19. I took it out OK at 29.06 and 30.79, but I knew I was in trouble at the 100 mark. See if you can spot the piano in this picture: 33.15 and 33.86, to finish just shy of 2:07.
I had inexplicably signed up for the 100 ***, which was the next event, and I swam it 10 heats after the 200. Note to self: Never go back to back with anything after a 200. I missed my seed time in the *** by about 5 seconds. I think the 200 continued to cost me throughout the day, maybe .5 or so in the 50 free.
I swam the 500 first the following day, but had learned my lesson by then. I opened it very slowly and easily and negative split it throughout, feeling much more comfortable. I wasn't worried about my time, and it served as a good warmup for the later events.
I think the 200 can be a good warmup for the 100 if you swim it smooth and easy, descending your splits but holding back enough to have some gas for the 100 -- but that is awfully tough to do when you're in a race. If you dump both the 200 and 50, try and get a good warmup in so that you are ready to go for it when the horn sounds for your 100.
Good luck!
I think a 200 may be a bit more anaerobic than a 400? If I can get myself to use it as a warm up, practice start and turns, I would be OK. But I know I can't do that.
I know it is crazy to go to a meet for basically one event, but I really need to get under a minute to reach my goal for this year. Next year I want to get under 55.
I will be doing a 500 for laughs after the 100, so I can expend what is left for that.

No it's not crazy! I've cruised in late to a meet for the purpose of swimming one event and then cheering for my teammates. Did a great time and had a blast. You go for that 100 free. That's your focus event for the season; that's what matters. I'd skip the 200 too, if I were you. It's too hard to restrain yourself from racing when you're in a real race. Good luck!
