Brian Jacobson, 33, swam two events at the USAS nationals in New York. As far as I could tell, he was the only regular masters swimmer at the meet. Vlad Plyschenko was scheduled to do the 200 free, but didn't swim it.
Here are Brian's times:
100 ***: 1:07.51
50 free: 23.20
The 100 *** is the best time Brian has done in masters, if memory serves.
The 50 free isn't his fastest time -- he went 22.91 in a masters meet in 2004 but somehow the record paperwork didn't get sent -- but it is faster than Rowdy's world record. Shame that he didn't swim it in a masters meet. But on the brighter side, he made it to the A final. What an accomplishment!
That 50 free time qualifies Brian for Olympic Trials. His 22.91 from 2004 wouldn't count because it wasn't done in a USAS meet. So now there are four swimmers with masters experience on the list of 2008 Trials qualifiers: Brian, Susan von der Lippe, Nick Brunelli and Gary Hall Jr. (though Nick and Gary only swam one masters meet each).
Congrats, Brian!
actually, he did swim at Mission Viejo- he broke the USMS world record in the 50 fly.
Yes, yes he did swim. I have it on videotape. He came up for his first armstroke at exactly 15m, and was already at least 2 bodylengths ahead of the next competitor.
I remember this race very well, as he was in my heat of 50 fly. Sadly, with my arm in a full-arm cast, I was not able to physically do the butterfly, and videotaped the heat myself. Though, when I saw GHJ up there, I was very tempted to one-arm it across the pool just to say I swam against GHJ.
