On USA Swimming's website there is a link to SI.COM where a poll is being run to determine who is the greatest American athlete. This is absolutely one of the most ridiculous polls of all time but perhaps some of you would like to vote or even watch the laughable debate on their video.

It depends on what they're comparing. If they're comparing what they've done for the sport, then it's really hard to pick. They've both done incredibly things in terms of promotion and recognition of their respective sports. In terms of athelticism, Phelps wins hands down. Golfers are in good shape (my ex-boyfriend is a professional golfer, and they do have be in good shape to play at that level), but swimming is definatley harder than chasing a little white ball around. Stupid little white ball.......never goes straight either, I think they rig them at the factory.... ;)
