I got out of practice when...

In another thread someone was mentioning getting out of practice early because they weren't doing well. When, or why, have you gotten out early? I'll start: (1) Kicked in the face (really hard, big owies!) (2) Kicked in the shoulder (by big guy 6'4" 200#s, I call him husband!) (3) Decided to swim with aforementioned husband immediately after putting to sleep 14 year old black Lab. We thought it would take our minds off of MacGuire. All I discovered was that I can't swim and cry at the same time. (4) Bad back- more owies. Good chiropractor- all better. And I SHOULD have got out (Jan 2001) when: I swam the whole workout, with good effort, and was shivering cold. I told my husband that I was really cold and he replied, "Maybe you should swim some more (tonight)." I said, "Nah, we're done, I'm getting out." That night I went to the ER and was diagnosed with viral meningitis! Nope, he still hasn't lived THAT one down :p
  • I actually got kudos a week or two ago for actually "completing" an entire practice....guess I should start another thread on that!

I used to be the hard working always doing the workout person in high school and college. Now that I am done, boy, have I changed. I got out of practice on Monday when the coach said (after a 500 warmup) "ok, the next set is a 1650, 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50. Try and hold the same pace for all" I get out when all it is a long distance freestyle like last night 6x400 hold pace. There is a really opinionated lady that swims in my lane and if I see her face and know that she is going to be in a bad mood I usually move over into a lap lane and do my own thing. I get out when I don't like the workout or I am not training for anything and lack the motivation to try hard.
  • I also will cut practices on my own short if someone asks to share my lane and then proceeds to either hog it, swim in the middle so slowly I can't even work on breaststroke (not that I ever swim it), OR I was planning on doing the rest of the workout fly OR if they are a head above water breaststroker ... I like having my own lane when I workout alone ...

Just this morning...was done with my main set, was goning to swim a 300 cool down swim....but had to go to the rest room....so just went, and then cooled down in the shower. lol
  • I do but they ask anyway ... it's my first line of defense ...
  • When I was a Senior in high school I gave blood and then went to a 2 hour AAU practice. DUH! Isn't it funny how invinceable we think we are when we are young!? I don't think I have ever bonked that badly. I got out because I felt so bad, went to stand up and almost passed out. I got so sick after that!

On a couple of occasions when I first started (last Nov-Dec) I'd have double hamstring cramps. It usually happened when I was drill a kick drill and fortunately had my kick board with me. I would be either hanging on the lane rope (when the board got away) or on the board waiting for the muscle to let go. It usually lasted about 10 minutes and then my lags would be to tired to swim and if I tried to swim, they'd cramp again. The life guard never even asked If I need help. Even the one time I sank to the bottom trying to massage the cramps out.

I find fly to be a good deterrant. If someone starts eyeing my lane during lap swim (and there are other lanes available) I throw in an IM, just to show that I'm serious. If the pool is crowded, though, sharing is a must. Why do people get in the pool if they don't want to get wet? ... I like having my own lane when I workout alone ... Amen to that, sister!
  • Hello Mr. Smith, Congratulations :) I heard you were out here again a little bit ago. Brian Stack said you swam there and also at WCM. I'm sorry I missed you guys. If it was in Feb. I was out with pneumonia. Not that we're part of your itinerary, but if you let us know when you'll be here we'll show you around :) Beer included, of course (upon completion of workout!!!)

i was clift diving in the exotic strip mine pools around Victoria Illinois & didn't jump out far enough and hit the side of the stip mining wall. Moved my knee cap. I had to swim to the other side of the lake to get out. It was one of the most painful experiences of my life. Unfortunately, those beautiful strip mine lakes (I'm serious. they were beautiful.) are now goen.
