1 minute 43.86 seconds. Other records too. I think that Phelp's awesome 100 free lead off leg of the 400 free relay may have set the stage for this 200 free WR. Phelps is more of a middle distance kind of swimmer than a pure sprinter....so for him to go 48.4 (or 48.5) in the 100 free on Day 1 should have been a pretty good premonition to him and everyone else that Thorpe's 200 free record was now in real jeopardy! Newmastersswimmer p.s. I wonder how many more world records Phelps and others might break before the meet is over. I would LOVE to see the Americans break the WR in the 800 free relay now as our own Frank Thompson predicted. BTW Did Klete Keller swim the 200 free and not make finals? I will have to check the prelim and semi-final results....Unfortunately I have to print the results in order to them to read ....kind of a pain really!
