Just curious of what type of breaststroke most people here swim? Which one of these three : conventional (flat), wave, or undulating (i.e. the very flexible Amanda Beard) you guys found most efficient and comfortable to swim?
I found myself swim a combination of wave and undulating. Just wonder what you all think of these different types of breaststroke. :agree:
Sigh. Another breaststroke thread hijacked by non-breaststrokers.
I'm a wave breaststroker, by the way, which I started in 1996 after 19 years of flast breaststroke.
Hmmm... I am a non-breaststroker, but I actually started a couple of the threads filled with tons of breaststroke info/advice. I think I also gave SS some advice on his recent breaststrokers' knee. So don't blame me, Jeff! :thhbbb: We can't all be like you and Allen & company.
I have a pretty flat breaststroke. I go more up and down than forward. I think this is largely because I have an awful kick. No excuse, good quads and flexible ankles. I guess I have an attitude problem.
Look at the pictures of Leisel underwater. She is doing everything right, her "lunge" is just straight forward. I think the undulating style is a dinosaur.Beard had much less back arch in 2004 than 1996. Hardy seems a hybrid and her SPL is awful(but man is she fast) The undulating style was developed as a way to swim wave-like before the rule change. None of the Aussies use it.
Flat. Old School.
Jeff, how hard was the transition. I asked my coach when I started Masters the first time 4 years ago and she told me not to switch. I am not back up to racing speed so to me it is a perfect time to spend time on stroke drills to switch over.
Gor Boost
I took me a year to be able to do the stroke consistently from day to day. I swam it at a meet after that year and went a best unshaved 100m ***. Too bad I swam like crap at nationals two months later.
And idguru said Ed Moses swims flat breaststroke. Not true. If your hands recover through or over the water, you swim wave breaststroke. Liesel Jones is the best example of flat breaststroke, and there are some YouTube videos of her, especially her recent world record.
My coach said I have undulated breaststroke....but I just do what comes naturally, I guess I need to videotape myself to see what the heck I am doing in the water.....

Then you will really appreciate this response Jeff. Mine is called "The empty set"...... Kind of like Rich's brain LOL!!
You can see if you think I swim a wave style by going to "oregonmasters.ning.com" and clicking on "world record relay"(yes I'm proud of that.)
Cool. :applaud: You have really fast hands. That was fun to watch! That website you got there is pretty nice.
