Does swimming burn as many calories as other sports? Unless you're putting in some real yardage, it doesn't seem like it does to me. I was chatting with some tri teammates awhile ago. They think they're slimmer when they're doing multiple sports and not just swimming. Me too, I think. Anyone else have thoughts on this? I guess I should be lifting weights ... Thanks in advance. :)
Geeks have feelings too you know!

Really? ;)
Going running to burn some calories. Swimming doesn't burn enough to support my non-fat free diet.
Yes, will swim breaststroke for hot men OR chocolate OR alcoholic beverages of my choice ... OR good shoes and handbags ...
Wait, are good shoes & handbags a reward for swimming breaststroke? Now I have a reason to work on it more!
As for weight loss, I have lost some weight swimming, but nothing dramatic. I do a good bit of cardio & some weights in addition to the swim, so I was fairly lean when I started back to swimming.
One area that did show dramamtic change was where/how I carried myself after swimming again. Almost immediately, people started commenting on how "skinny" I was. It wasn't weight loss, it was redistribution! All the long-reach freestyle swimming and core muscle focus (read sucking in the baby belly) tightened up my mid-section, so even though there was no real weight loss, it looked like I dropped 10 lbs!
Oh, and no self-respecting Philly chick would ever eat a Twinkie. Peanutbutter Kandycakes & Butterscotch Krimpets are it. "Nobody bakes a cake as tasty as a TastyKake!" www.tastykake.com/.../100336_info.jpgwww.tastykake.com/.../100341_info.jpg
I am asked this question ALL the time because I am a large gal who swims mega-yardage. And here is my answer. First, swimming for one hour burns upwards toward 600 calories, but the average person does NOT swim for an entire hour. And the second part to this answer is: I may burn 600 calories in an hour, but I most certainly DO put those calories back in, so swimming tones my body but so far does not aid in weight loss (but it's my fault).

You're on! Don't underestimate the power of the B-scotch krimpie though. I'll bring an assortment, but I must warn you, they are addicting and hard to come by outside the Philly area.

So is the peanut butter Kandycakes and the Butterscotch Krimpets the reason why you are so "Spoiled" Dana?
Look who's talking...did you discover fire yet?

Swimmers burn tons of calories...but they also have very large appetites.
What I don't get is why swimming Backstroke or Breaststroke burns more calories than swimming "Crawl-fast"...according to the WebMD.
(The web MD must be a triathlete).
