Swimming as a calorie burner?

Does swimming burn as many calories as other sports? Unless you're putting in some real yardage, it doesn't seem like it does to me. I was chatting with some tri teammates awhile ago. They think they're slimmer when they're doing multiple sports and not just swimming. Me too, I think. Anyone else have thoughts on this? I guess I should be lifting weights ... Thanks in advance. :)

I am asked this question ALL the time because I am a large gal who swims mega-yardage. And here is my answer. First, swimming for one hour burns upwards toward 600 calories, but the average person does NOT swim for an entire hour. And the second part to this answer is: I may burn 600 calories in an hour, but I most certainly DO put those calories back in, so swimming tones my body but so far does not aid in weight loss (but it's my fault). donna
