I'm so proud of my Georgia girl! I just received this in an email from UGA. UGA is in fifth right now. Not bad considering we don't have a single diver!
On the opening night of competition at the 2007 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis, Kara Lynn Joyce completed her four-year sweep of the 50y freestyle event, becoming just the second woman in history to do so in the premiere sprint event. Joyce clocked a 21.71 in the final (after splitting 21.69 in the opening relay) to claim her 17th career title.
"I am really happy to be able to do that," said Joyce. "I am pretty happy with my swim (in the 50). It's always nice to pull out a win. This event is more competitive now than it has been in the past three years."
"I couldn't be more proud of her," said Bauerle. "We have never had an athlete win an event all four years. It really is such a feat to do that at this level. She got a lot of points for Georgia, and this year every point is really important."
Through the first six events, Georgia stands fifth in the team race with 86 points. Arizona has taken an early lead with 168 points.
I couldn't agree more, but I'd rather swim a 50 free than a 200 fly! Blech!!! (I am sort of a swimming encyclopedia at least for the last few years - I remember the Descenza thing being a big deal last year because only Mary T had done and I BELIEVE had taken a year off for the Olympics so it wasn't 4 consecutive years, but 4 crowns overall in 5 years)
She finished 9th in the 200 free though so her bid to tie Thompson isn't going to happen, which is such a shame. I'll be she'll be rearing to go in the 100 though.
Remember that the 19 titles includes RELAYS as well so at least in theory she could still tie it or break it with a win in the 100 free and a couple of relay titles. I really don't see Georgia winning any of the relays this year, though, so I think that she'll end up with 18. Still pretty impressive...
