I thought I'd try an experiment here. I propose that anyone of any swimming level can use this thread (or not) when, whether in a small way or earthshaking manner you've done something in the pool that you're proud and/or pleased by. Anyone is welcome to add encouraging comments (or not) or ask for more info., but please no grandstanding or feuding.
Okay- I'll go first (and I'm just as hesitant as anyone else). Context: last few months hellish: collapse of my dream business, death in family, huge money troubles etc. result months out of water & exercise & 30lb gain. Further, I just went back over the last 10 yrs, averaged 1 meet a year, no more than 4 months training in any one year. So- been back in water 4 weeks, 2-3 times a week and mostly feeling like chopped liver. Monday night coach say we're going to do dive 25's (meters) from blocks, starter's instructions. Now I haven't done this in years 'cause I have a very bad neck- but I've been frustrated so...did all 3 breastroke 16.3, 15.5, 16.2 which tells me I've still got prospects to go fast again! I am pleased.

By whom? You're swimming for yourself (and your fans and/or loved ones -if they're different folks-)
Any spectators of a Masters event are probably NOT paying public but friends, loving family (unless they're waiting for a huge inheritance from Grampa who's doing a 1500m at their insistence) of a participant, in which case they know, that 6 or 8 or 7 swimmers in the same heat (same gender or not) are more often than not of different age groups and skills.
The real competition is two-fold:
a) when you get the results and compare them to what you were expecting or to what you did last year (or the previous event).
In your case, you'll be doing a PB
(Personal Best: officially, that is).
b) b) won't come into play until your next meet or next year, whichever comes first, as you start to develop (or find) targets, or nemeses (if this is an incorrect plural, replace it with ..."more than one nemesis").
Good luck, do your best (that's all anyone can ask - at any level) and let us know how you did..... no matter what.
You've just recently found yourself an almost Forever Family. (To find out the meaning of this last reference, do a search for "Forever Family").
Yeah I can't wait, I am sure it is going to be a blast. That is what everyone on my team keeps telling me. I am not expecting much, at least not first place. I am just there for the experience, see how I do, who knows?
Good luck TN Boy!
Now a big attagirl to my FAF twin Draculina Beth/Swimr4Life who swam blazing fast 50 and 100 frees this Saturday, which were her fastest this season!! She is now #1 in the nation in the 100 free (56.2)!! More swims to come. She proves you don't need sleep to swim fast. :groovy:
Also attaboy to SwimStud who is a CONN State Champ and PR'd both his 50 free and 200 ***, dropping a full second in both! (No doubt, the starts were improved!) :applaud: :woot:

HAHA I am so mighty! Be in fear of the swimmer who manages to be both first and last in all his events for his age group! I am THAT talented.
hahaha
Good job to You Beth!! Attagirl.
Attagirl Beth! - Way to go! :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:
Attastud! - When you drop a full second, it doesn't matter if you're both first and last! :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

At least, the only one who beat you, was .....................YOU and you finished second-best to...........YOU!
I -also- was both that, in one event but..............
a) in the Heat Sheets, the database had calculated the age as at the date of the swim, so there were only two swimmers in my age group for the LCM 50m Free.
At the meet, they printed and posted the results.
I came in second (of two participants, i.e., dead last).
b) Next day (or the one after that) I checked the website to make sure I had read my time right.
They had, in the meantime corrected the ages (as at 31 Dec), I ended being first of six or seven swimmers 60-64.
I did, of course, congratulate myself.
Thanks imspoiled,
My boys did great. My oldest took 3rd in the 50 free out of about 40 kids, this in only his second meet. He also swam a great 100 *** and 50 back. We left before the results were posted on the 100 ***, but I think he placed in that as well.
My youngest, who has been swimming longer, dropped over 3 seconds in his 50 free, dropped 5 seconds in his 100 back, and held even on his 50 ***. He was very excited about his swims. :groovy:
Kevin
WOW! It sounds like your boys have the great combination of hard work and talent. It's amazing that your oldest son got 3rd in his SECOND meet! The time drops that your youngest had are huge! He must be working very hard. 3 seconds on a 50 is an impressive drop!
2 ATTABOYS and one big ATTAPARENT for you and your wife. It truly takes dedicated parents to get the swimmers to all those practices!
