This has been bothering me for years, you know, you hear that a research study has been conducted and they find that eggs are bad for you, and then back in the 1980s, it was highly recommended that people each more carbs and those folks started packing on pounds (probably they added too much oil to their pasta dishes, who knows), and the low-fat items which are indeed low fat, but they are loaded with chemicals and carbs to get them that way, and tonight on the news, there is now a research report that says people are passing away from vitamins and supplements. The vitamin manufacturers did report they have seen an increase in this, but don't know why. This was on the Ticker on Fox News.
So does the general population really follow these trendy research reports? I know I have always been skeptical of any report. I remember back when I was a child I saw very few overweight people; there weren't a lot of fastfood places to eat; we ate balanced meals and snacks were fruit. Not anymore it seems. And the only reason why I am large is because I put in more than I spend (well, duh).
There was a report that did get my attention several years ago and it came from the Mayo Clinic. They reported they found that sunblock caused some skin cancers. Now, this was squashed after being on the news for a few short days, but their study really went into detail and it had been conducted for over 15 years. A friend of mine who is a dermatologist in California agrees with this study in some cases. He says he is finding an alarming number of cancers that are attributed to overuse of sunblocks. His recommendation is to cover the body with lightweight clothing, stay in the sun only 2 hours a day for the vitamin benefits, and to use nothing over a 15 sunblock.
So, even though after being on this island for six years now, and having ate more fish than is probably in the sea, I am longing for enchiladas and anything beef because I haven't seen a study yet on enchiladas.
Thoughts?

Do it. That's why I started swimming. I looked like how you describe yourself. Didn't have any desire to resume running and walking wasn't doing the trick either. So I started going to the pool, cut back on the eats, and started being a little more choosy about what I ate. Dropped about 25 pounds and found out I wasn't too bad of a swimmer either. Now it's an addiction. posted by poolraat
Thanks for the encouraging words and sharing that little testimonial...I'm so glad you're on a healthier path now and things are going better....I went through something similar a few years ago and lost about 85 pounds in a year doing the same kinds of things....I just need to find my way back to that routine again....I think I will as soon as I get some other issues out of the way that are holding me back right now.

 Very funny, Jim; I thought about having my head frozen because it is so hot here in the tropics (close to equator), and with our power outages (it's out again today), I figure one of the reasons why I am doing the Roatan to Utila swim is that is the only way I can get off this rock, and if a shark wants me for lunch, I'll take my chances, but I'll swim those 19 miles to get outta here and enjoy great health from swimming so much. I'll sure be in great shape and look better physically (see? I am keeping this health related). I will be a force to be reckoned with!! I may actually be strong enough to beat up that shark.
Had a potato for lunch and overripe tomato and no supplements because it isn't Happy Hour yet.

You can work all your life and save into your 401k, and as you leave your retirement party looking forward to the long cruise, you get hit by a bus...it can happen.
Wow, aren't you Mr. Sunshine today! :thhbbb:
I'm with Fortress - I drink diet soda because I'd rather get my calories elsewhere . . . usually from ice cream.
Donna - nothing wrong with the rum. Like my dad says "it kills the germs" (though vodka is his germ killer of choice). Oh, and BTW, it's 5:00pm somewhere. ;)
I eat a very healthy diet. When I added my supplements, I felt better, had more energy and didn't catch every virus that came my way like I did before I took them. They work for me....therefore I believe in them.
Unless you buy A LOT of fresh fruits and vegetables, only eat whole foods and cook from scratch you probably don't get all that you need from your diet.
ITA - The hubby and I are trying to lean more towards organic whole foods, but sometimes we don't quite get there. I like knowing that I've got my bases covered even when I end up at Dairy Queen for dinner (they have the BEST french fries!).
I don't eat as healthy as I could but I'm trying to change that. I was just diagnosed (if that's the right word) with high cholestrol and will probably be on drugs for it for the rest of my life within the year. But back to food: LOVE IT ALL! Fries are my fav, then Mexican (so excited to go back to Texas!).
Kyra,
Try to get to a nutritionist if you can re: your cholesterol. My husband's was 237 total (with the bad number being 160-something, I think) and through diet alone he got it down to 157 and got the bad under 100. Now, diet won't work for everyone, but it's worth a try to avoid the drugs and their sometimes unpleasant side effects.
As for the fad diets... my parents are often on a version of Atkins and all the saturated fat in it really scares the crap out of me! I'm with ensignada... moderation is good and feast/celebration foods are A-OK! Even the nutritionist we met with said if you want to eat some really high-calorie, high-fat foods, go for it. Just do it for a special occasion, like your birthday or anniversary, but not everyday! :)
Interesting Carrie, because I have met your husband. When you think of someone with high cholestrol you think of someone not fit, which your husband certainly does not fit that bill. I have a BIL who runs marathons, and no matter how much he watches his diet and exercises, he cannot get his numbers down. Last year at 47 he finally got put on meds. He has outlived both his parents who died of heart attacks. Shows what genetics can do.
You'd think so, but I did one of those online diet tracker sites for a few months when I got back into swimming. I found I was getting the USDA recommended amounts on nearly everything except a couple real trace minerals and I definitely don't eat a ton of fruits and vegetables.
One thing of note was I was exceeding the recommended sodium intake. Not by a huge amount, but I was exceeding it. I never put salt on any of my food. I think it's all but impossible not to exceed the recommended sodium intake if you eat a fair percentage of packaged food.
I think huge favour everyone could do themselves is drink plenty of water--preferably not mid stroke...:joker:
Swim Stud, you are so correct about the water drinking. I have been a huge water drinker since I was in my early 20s; I got addicted to it and I think I get grumpy when I don't get my almost 2 gallons a day. But now as I find out that drinking that much water eliminates much of the electrolytes that I need; it ends up flushing them out so I guess I overdo it, but I just have to have my water :shakeshead:

I also love drinking water too.... only its El Agua Del Diablo (The water of the devil)...AKA tequila! ...hey we agreed on a few small jokey posts here and there right!....Actually on a more serious thread on-topic related note....I've heard that a small amount of liquor (like a shot or 2 of the good stuff) per day
might be good for the cardiovascular system....So I was on topic Rich o.k.!
