Non-swim thread but health thread

This has been bothering me for years, you know, you hear that a research study has been conducted and they find that eggs are bad for you, and then back in the 1980s, it was highly recommended that people each more carbs and those folks started packing on pounds (probably they added too much oil to their pasta dishes, who knows), and the low-fat items which are indeed low fat, but they are loaded with chemicals and carbs to get them that way, and tonight on the news, there is now a research report that says people are passing away from vitamins and supplements. The vitamin manufacturers did report they have seen an increase in this, but don't know why. This was on the Ticker on Fox News. So does the general population really follow these trendy research reports? I know I have always been skeptical of any report. I remember back when I was a child I saw very few overweight people; there weren't a lot of fastfood places to eat; we ate balanced meals and snacks were fruit. Not anymore it seems. And the only reason why I am large is because I put in more than I spend (well, duh). There was a report that did get my attention several years ago and it came from the Mayo Clinic. They reported they found that sunblock caused some skin cancers. Now, this was squashed after being on the news for a few short days, but their study really went into detail and it had been conducted for over 15 years. A friend of mine who is a dermatologist in California agrees with this study in some cases. He says he is finding an alarming number of cancers that are attributed to overuse of sunblocks. His recommendation is to cover the body with lightweight clothing, stay in the sun only 2 hours a day for the vitamin benefits, and to use nothing over a 15 sunblock. So, even though after being on this island for six years now, and having ate more fish than is probably in the sea, I am longing for enchiladas and anything beef because I haven't seen a study yet on enchiladas. Thoughts? Donna

Eat, drink, and be merry. I think if you pay even a little attention to your diet, you exercise, and you see an MD for a checkup on a regular basis you will be so far ahead of the majority of this country that it's not even funny. I don't stress over every calorie of food label but I am aware of what I eat in general and try to make good choices more often than not. I am trying to walk a line between health and convenience. Only time will tell how I am doing.

Fort: Peter may be right about the grapefruit interaction thing, but you aren't on heart meds so no worry. I found that when living in the States my pharmacist knew as much if not more than my doctor so I would always ask questions; and he didn't charge me for a consultation and no appt needed!! Donna That is a great point to make. Many people seem to think of pharmacists as people who merely move pills from one bottle to another (which, I'll admit I used to think as well) but there is a lot of knowledge required to stand behind that counter and dispense those pills in the first place.

Only time will tell how I am doing. I had my annual oil change and fluid top up about 3 months back. I'd been hitting the Rum pretty good in the weeks up to that point--2-3 good ones a night. Doc asked "if I told you to stop could you?" I said of course. She didn't think anything of it. went back later for a PT script told her about the swimming and stuff. She was overjoyed I was taking preemptive action by seeking PT before I had bad back spasm--I guess they see too many overindulgeing/non exercising folks who come in and just expect to be repaired with a pill. I'm not making judegments with using overindulging. Some folks don't have time to take care of themselves as best they might.

Along came a tumor, benign thank God, as well as a family and I changed my way of thinking.

Les- you don't have to give up caffeine, but time your intake of stuff it might interfere with. I presume you're not chugging down caffeine during your late-night ode-preparation time, are you? Rich, right, now you've turned my stomach- green tea, blech!

Matt...spare time is all relative...I'm sorry but in this very expensive corner of the country. Many regular Joe's and Jane's work 2 jobs to make ends meet. I'm not having a go at you. You had an epiphany of sorts, and changed your habits. I know we joked about foregoing sleep but that is not healthy either. I also know and hear of good in shape athletes dropping dead on the field too--life is a lottery. You can work all your life and save into your 401k, and as you leave your retirement party looking forward to the long cruise, you get hit by a bus...it can happen.

Eek! Are you kidding? posted by Matt about my diet No, unfortunately I'm not kidding....I just eat on the go for convenience and my wife and I both work a lot so we don't do a lot of cooking....Our daily routine is just more compatable with fast food (take it and eat it on the run for convenience)....its not good....but unfortunately that is my current diet....Maybe that has something to do with why I look 8 months pregnant....I am hoping to change these things soon of course! I agree with this. People go nuts with all the supplements and vitamins. You should be getting what you need purely from diet, and if you aren't then alter your diet a little. Within Reason Kirk...some things are harder to get in your food than others and time constraints can affect what we eat and how. I think vitamins at least, and an energy supplement pre-workout are pretty tame, no?
