Shampoo/Conditioner of choice?

I went through a couple million pages of old threads and didn't come over a topic like this...maybe I just missed it in my skimming, but if not... my hair is completely dead. Chlorine build-up, dry and just BLAH. I have asked around at those stores that only sell hair products, and they always reccomend a different one. I can't not calculate how much money I have spent on various hair shampoos and conditioners that were suppose to be GREAT for swimmers. I was wondering what some of you all use. I don't have a problem splurging on a product...if its going to work!

Aveda hair detoxifier (that's the shampoo) and leave-in elixir conditioner.

I have medium length hair a little longer than my shoulders I guess at the moment. A few years ago I cut it completly off, only about 2inches all around...that was great for the swimming, but I was sick of being confused for a boy :-(. I also have curly hair, but during swimming the curls almost completly disappear...a hairstylist I saw said it was directly because of the chlorine, being so heavy on my hair that it pulls the curls out. I figure I will definatly go to a high end hair place during spring break and get this hair taken care of, and then start a real good hair care regimine, because I like my curly hair:-(.

I like using our kids BedHead stuff that smells like berries and what not. My hair is always pretty short so it does not take much to keep things under control.
  • I'll second the Aveda products. Pricey, but worth it.
  • I think the shampoo/conditioner thread was a few years ago. I think the idea of putting baking soda in shampoo was written here too a while ago. I have long hair and I like to use Aussie 5 minute miracle to condition once a week. It is great. Good luck. Swimmy :)
  • I just use regular Head & Shoulders... Rince and repeat. But then again, my hair is out of control... :dedhorse:

In the past I've gotten into having multi-color highlighting and asked my stylist how to protect it with all the swimming. She told me to mix baking soda w/water, work it into my hair and let it sit for a few minutes. It nutralizes all those chemicals somehow. Then shampoo with a high-moisturizing shampoo and a good conditioner. Leave the conditioner on for a few minutes too. Avoid the blow dryer. When I follow this regimen I find my hair stays pretty healthy and the color hold pretty well. Anyone else ever try this baking soda treatment? I hate to sound dumb -- but here goes..:dunno: So -- do you sprinkle dry baking soda on your head and dip under the shower to wet it and then wash? Or do you premix baking soda with the water and use it kinda like shampoo? If you premix -- can you do that far ahead of time and carry it in your swim bag?

Baking soda is interesting stuff. One of my clients today was a welder who has to buy many flame retardant shirts over the course of the year. The flame retardant is largly baking soda, which washes out after a few washings.

I use baking soda along with the $1.50 Suave stuff. I mix about a quater size (less if I wasn't in the water very long) in with my shampoo and then just wash my hair like normal. Then put in the cheapest conditioner the store carries and let it sit for no less than a minute. I only swim three times a week, so I'm not sure if the baking soda would cause damage if you used it everyday so maybe use it every other day. My hair isn't a picture of health, but it has definatley be much much worse. One of my roommates has about 7,000 different types of shampoos and conditioners and I don't see a difference between her hair and my other roommates who use the same stuff I do, so if you can get away with the cheap stuff I'd say go for it. I don't have curly hair, but I had a perm once and used the baking soda and it didn't kill my curl.
