Ready..VENT! What keeps you from getting to the pool?
Me first.
I am so bummed. Traffic was all jammed up because of an accident and oil spill on the expressway. It took me 2 hours and 10 minutes to get home. That's a 10 mile drive. I could have run faster if they let me take a straight line on the highway. I sat and peeled and ate an orange without even creeping forward. And not one of those tangelos or zipper peel kinds. Thank goodness I had snacks. I certainly didn't think to visit the ladies room before I left work. Normally even in the worst of traffic it's less than an hour. I couldn't even get off the highway because all the exits were jammed because the city was blocked up because people couldn't get on the highway.
And I thought traffic was going to be wasy because of school vacation week.
I work full time and go to school part time. That ate up all my swimming time for the evening. I went to work and left work early to get in some good pool time tonight.
Blech.
Your turn...NEXT!

traffic, traveling husband, kids, sinus infections, shoulder pain.
Ditto....we are definitely twins seperated at birth! The only thing different is my lack of sinus infections. (I'm knocking on wood now!) I have to add caring for my parents (health issues) and my insomnia!:dedhorse:
insomnia!:dedhorse:
What idiot invented this *&%j#@*&* thing? It wasn't a DAWG, that's for sure! It plagues me periodically. I can always use more sleep.
As for sinus infections, I think you started using those saline nasal sprays before I determined how valuable they were ... I'm hooked now.
The time before work and swimming, usually one hour. I've found this common with other teammates. We call this the dead hour. I've developed a ritual, very exciting, of stopping at the Store 24 and buying lemon tea and a Nature's Valley peanut butter granola bar. Then I take the T (Boston) and am typical American eating food fast on train, dropping crumbs everywhere.
This helps me get to practice. At practice I try not to complain to people before we start swimming. I tell myself I am here to swim despite the pit of the dead hour.
Also, I've been told sleep is overrated. I don't sleep much and I've learned I can swim on very little sleep. Of course, it's better to sleep.
But if I don't get to practice, it's because the dead hour got me. Then I watch TV all night and feel guilty.

I see you are leaving our area and flying to Chicago just to avoid traffic. That's pretty desperate.
Jeff, be advised. In Chicago there are two seasons: winter and road construction...maybe you'll be able to take public transportation?
Perfect thread for me!
I have an eye condition (partially blocked lacrimal ducts) in which I now get eye infections every time I swim. Docs think it's from the goggles rubbing against the lacrimal system that surrounds the eyes and due to the chlorine envt and bacteria and such that are in the pool.
Turns out, when I don't swim, I don't get eye infections. Eyes are okay.
I could opt to have eye surgery which has a 20% success rate short term which would then be followed up by major eye surgery. So - no thanks. Cut my swim career about 40 yrs short, but I feel fortunate to be able to run, do weights, take cardio classes, etc. Maybe I'll show up for a couple of low key meets and do some 50s (with no swim practice) - that should be interesting!!
I feel fortunate to have an option for a normal life without surgery. No swimming stinks for sure - but as I've always said - Momma will take what she can get.
Anyhoo, my 5 mile run this morning seemed like a warm up. Off to try this "Ultimate Conditioning" class - I'll be surprised if this is actually the case. There's no exercise like swimming! Although running is not as horrible as I once thought!
Kristina
You've had to quit?
Isn't there a more mask type goggle that will work better for your eyes?
Granted you might not be able to dive but you can push start or at worst still workout.
Have you looked at homeopathic help for the eyes etc?
I think it's a shame to be forced to give up something.
Well I guess OW is still OK right? Maybe you can room with Donna and join her on the 18 miler!
What keeps me out of the water? Besides my stupid shoulder, there is work travel, and work travel and then the winter blues. Sometimes I get home from work and I just can't get myself to get back in the car for an 8-9 PM workout. It's not so bad in the summer when it is light out, but in the winter when it is dark, cold and rainy I have troubles. Our pool is only open at night on Mondays and Wednesdays, so I have to make sure and get there those nights.
I am so used to getting up by 4:45-5 that I no longer need an alarm, crazy.
Yeah...I can get up pretty easily at 515am since thats the time I have gotten up since August because of college swimming. But thats slightly different, because I HAVE to be there...this gettin up at 445 is pretty much OPTIONAL and knowing that, even as much as I try not to acknowledge that, it makes it hard sometimes. But so far so good..I've been diligent.
