Swimming Uninjured..Is it possible?

I have been swimming for 50 years and have had 3 swim injuries. I know of some great, great swimmers who have been doing the same and remain untouched. How do they do this? If it is because their greatness is due to technique, they sure need to share. But I also wonder if it is because they swim smart, train smart, know their limitations and train accordingly. Do they listen to their bodies first and train second? Something many people don't do, me included in the past. I've watched Laura Val (The Machine) and heard of Susan Heim Brown. I am amazed. Is it also stroke related?. I know I swam only backstroke for 40 years and voila, 1993 rotator cuff surgery; 1995 impingement surgery; 1996 torn SI joint (sigh). And I learned technique very early on by world class coaches and swimmers; we did all the right things and were doing hip rotation back in the 60s before a lot of swimming folks were doing it. Any thoughts on how this comes to be for some and not others? Donna

David- are you going to stop staring into that light soon? Couldn't be good for the orbs, y'know. Two members of my lane have come down with devastating shoulder injuries in the last couple of weeks- snow boarding and skiing the culprits though. They're both out for the season, competition-wise. One of them is my personal lane g.p.- bummer, eh? Bad karma may be a primary cause of swimming injuries, whoops, let me just squash this spider..aack! There goes my shoulder...
  • Jim: No, I just wish I was married to an orthopod sometimes! I'm sure I'd be much less trouble. I'd be on steroid packs every multi-day meet, getting cortisone injections daily, getting more massages, better diagnoses. The life ... I don't think it's the TFs that may prevent my longevity. But I'm not averse to trying human growth hormone or Paul Smith as a coach. As for physiology, I'll trade mine. I'd like a taller version with iron shoulders and no loosey goosey tendons. Better bugel too. Despite Mr. Smith and Mr. Barra goading me on, my blood pressure and cholesterol are just ducky. As to "limited physical labor," I refuse to shovel snow or lug big bags of mulch anymore. But I am a bit of a clutz, so an inadvertent accident could certainly derail me. I slipped on the ice the other day ... Which leads to dumb luck. Another factor I didn't mention. But I guess Peter did. Sledding, skiing, and roller blading account for a lot of injuries, especially among kids. Oh, and there's travel soccer too. Blech. Bad for knees, feet, and ankles. FlyQueen: So that old labrum tear is your excuse for no backstroke? What do you do to keep it under control now?
  • Fort, I must say that your daughter has some interesting form there on her dive! I can only imagine what the actually point of entry into the water must have looked like....LOL!! :D Newmastersswimmer Her technique is absolutely perfect! So what if she's the only one in the family not in PT or ART? Her smile is absolutely perfect too. :groovy: I am not allowing her to play travel soccer so that there is a chance my smile will stay in the reasonably intact range. I, of course, would never say I was perfect. But I'm sure my fly is. Is yours or are you star gazing too?
  • Fort, Your daughter is absolutely adorable. That picture captures so much of her personality. She seems fearless, fun loving and very self-confident in that pose. Is that her personality? (Yes...I'm hijacking...sorry)

(Yes...I'm hijacking...sorry) Aww.... Thanks guys. The 6 year old is very sparkly and fun and whimsical. She loves to dance and is an avid fan of American Idol. But this one here, she is the FEARLESS FAF Sista! Should have seen her snowboarding a couple weeks ago. Gave me the shivers. If we lived in Colorado, there would be no swimming, I'm sure. If only she weren't a breaststroker ... She also has a little case of shoulder tendonitis from a weak scapular and some loosey goosey tendons. What can we do, twin? So now we do our RC stuff together. Quite the family. P.S. Her breaststroke technique is very good -- she can smoke SwimStud.

I think what Donna is getting at here, and she can correct me if I'm wrong (I'm sure she will), is what factors account for the incredible longevity of stars like her friend Laura Val. I think technique is critical for long term success. But are you so wrapped up in yoga poses, you can't credit other factors? Training? Mental stamina? Unique physiology? Lack of time constraints? Great coaching? Weights? Nutrition? Talent? Constant ART and massages? Ingestion of pinot noir? Abstinence? No TFs? Fins? Jolly good amusement from pool toys? Married to an orthopod? Anti-aging gene? Human growth hormone? Paul Smith as a coach? Geek as a training partner? posted by fortress Married to an orthopod eh?.....Is your husband really an orthopod Les? Must be nice!? What if you're married to arthropod instead? Could that cause any injuries down the road?....LOL! I think the last 2 conditions you listed are the most scarey though!! :laugh2: Newmastersswimmer

Backstroke is a no no for me. My initial injury was from ballistic stretching but to this day when I attempt backstroke I can feel an impeding injury in the works. It's hard to explain but some might know what I am talking about (binding, a leadup to clicking, etc). I stick to free and *** and swim them as hard as I can. So far, injury free.

And judging from that carefree style she's using in that dive, she must also be quite fearless I would say...LOL! :laugh2: Newmastersswimmer

You're going to have your hands full in the next few years...
