Not meaning to brag about my breaststroke..

...but I am really feeling good right now. I just got back from my swim and I am very happy. I posted a 3:40 in a timed 200. My goal is to beat it by 10 secs for the event. I know at least I can finish the swim....so that was one thing. I did my workout and did 100s at 1:45 and the best was 1:40 if I can paste those 2 times together for a whole 200 I'll have a good time--for a first time swim. Now the bit I feel good about--please don't look at this as a brag. I asked the lifeguard to assess my stroke and see if there was anything major I could work on he said "That was a pretty awesome swim" and gave me a couple of minor things to work on. I feel so happy that I am not totally stupid looking. I thank all of those who gave me encouargement and advice with my stroke. Then I asked him to check my dive. I did a grab but I can't quite grab b/c of my bad back...I felt uneasy with the racing stance start, so I said to him. "I'm not looking to win, if I can get in and not lose my goggles I'll be happy.." I did my sort of grab, a pullout, kick and then broke out. I was halfway up the pool. He said it was a nice looking dive and that I got further out than he does and he's 20ish. It's just what I needed. I'm feeling pretty good for an old fart tonight! Thanks to all my friends for getting me on the path. Rich
  • Great!!!!!! Keep it up. Do you have a racing suit yet. Kitajima and Hansen both where jammers. I like the Fastskin II jammer(like Kitajima's) but Hansen seems to do OK:rofl: in his Nike jammer. Regarding your swim today:applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

Thanks to all my friends for getting me on the path. Rich Awesome! Now don't celebrate with too much sake tonight. Or, go ahead I guess. You could also get someone to film you and get some advice from us experts instead of lifeguards.

Well yeah there is that, but I've seen this guy crawl, fly and breaststroke. He is a competetive swimmer too. I'm just pumped that he didn't have like 17 things I am doing wrong. He said to tuck chin more & shrug shoulders on my streamline, get my hips moving into the stroke, and work on not pausing my hands on the recovery. 3 little things to work on that I couldn't see for myself. Waiting for santa on that race suit Allen. If I get one now I risk being injured in a domestic incident :D

Rich, I am going to take a different perspective here. When a swimmer is doing well, they should be told so. In no way is this bragging, it is being congratulated on making strides in performance. When a person meets goals and even supersedes them, they deserve, because they have earned it, a hug and words of encouragement. Progress in a swimmer's journey is earned through hard work and dedication--theirs. So if you think it is bragging, so be it; I look at it as enthusiastic progress, especially since your back is not what it could be. Positive feedback is paramount to continuing a journey to personal greatness. I am just very happy for you that you see such progress. Don't slack too much over Christmas and New Year's; your meet is in January!!! an Admirer, islandsox

Good job! Keep up the hard work and you'll no doubt surprise yourself next month. I am just getting into breaststroke a bit now. I am hoping to swim a 50 *** at a meet in January so I timed myself tonight from a pushoff. 41 seconds. Yuk! Well, I know what I need to work on so I'll keep plugging along.

I just realized I should probably start swimming some 100 *** to prepare for the 50 a little better. We'll see how it goes...it's such an exhausting stroke to swim fast.

Better than my time Matt by about 10 secs! Don't be so tough on yourself. I am eager to see how a race suit and hair "clipping" (not going to shave totally for this meet) affects my time.

Yes but you are swimming twice the distance. I could not hold that pace for a 100, I guarantee that! I need to keep increasing my *** yardage up until the meet. It will help my *** and probably improve my free as well with some newfound stamina.
  • I wear jammers for meets. I think since you are not supposed to flex at the hips the jammers do no harm. Leg suits are clearly bad for *** IMHO. Kitajima and Hansen seem to do fine in jammers. This may be an arrogant question, but do these coaches really understand breaststroke. Many coaches don't seem to. I have found for myself that jammers are faster in meets than briefs or kneeskins and much faster than full body suits. Try for yourself. Your results may vary.
