How about Dennis Baker's record for the 40-44 200 fly LCM? It's a 2:05.55. That's faster than all but one of the records in any age group younger than that (30-34 record is 2:03.85 by Bobby Patten).
The Olympic Trials cut is 2:03.99 in that event, by the way. Has any swimmer over 40 ever made a Trials cut?

I believe Susan Von der Lippe is the only one currently to make an Olympic Trials cut at the age of 40. I believe she did it in the 100 meter *** with a time of 1:12.49 and what is sad about this is because the bulkheaded pool was not measured, it did not count for a USMS/World Record. I know of Dennis Baker and Paul Carter got real close to the time cuts but I believe as of now they have not made them. There was an article in Swim Magazine in 2000 about USMS swimmers making Olympic Trial cuts and swimming in Indianapolis at the meet. I remember at least 10 to 12 swimmers profiled, but none of them were over 40. There have been quite a few over 30 that have made the cuts and swam in the meet. Rocque Santos and Ron Karnaugh come to mine. Also Sandy Nelison Bell and Tracie Moll from the women come to mine.
I believe the following three will not be overturned for a long time:
1. The number of times Smith (both are one in the same) has jumped on the soap box about foreign swimmers. This record is as safe as DiMaggio's consecutive hits record.
2. The number of times Gull (formerly gull80) can post Speedo man's pix and not get sanctioned.
3. The number of times Cruise will accuse North Carolinians of being swamp bound, cousin' kissin', lard eatin' hillbillies (only 2 of those are true, btw).
It's hard to pick a single record. As to the women, I like these:

Not bothering with my own age group, 45-49, because Karlyn Pipes-Neilson will start clobbering them when she ages up.
Actually I put my money on two that Dara Torres set this weekend at a SCM meet in Coral Springs. She went 25.1 in the 50 and 54.95 in the 100. Those are the fastest times EVER for a female masters swimmer in any age group. Not too bad 8 months after having a baby. I'd say she's well on her way in her attempt to make the US Olympic team.
Fortress, she is unlikely to break her long course record. She would have to swim a LCM meet before the end of the year since effective Jan. 1, 2007 she will be 40 for meters meets.

My money would be on Tom Lane and his 100m long course record of 4:05.98.

Angel Martino has some crazy fast records in the 30-34 age group in the 50 fr, 100 fr, 50 fly and 100 fly. And Karlyn Pipes-Neilson is close behind in the 40-44 age group and in even more events). I can't pick one example as both seem so amazingly fast (and out of my reach).
BTW, can anyone set me straight on Angel Martino's (aka Meyers) Olympic history? She was banned for 2 or 4 years in the 1988 Olympic Trials for drug use (steroid like compound) and then came back in 1992 and 1996 and earned a total of 6 Olympic medals and former world and all american record holder. But, she was clean after 1988, right? Interesting history there, if I've got it correct.
