Just curious how many have started swimming over the age 40 and been able to get under 60 sec in the 100. If so, just how fast and after how many years training?
How about the 200 yd?
Looking to see what can be done for inspiration!!

I've been swimming for 7 years (1st meet after 2 yrs) and a year and a half ago (age 53) I went 59 low. The 200 is another story...best is 2:17 last spring.
Ande,
I started swimming at 47 with no prior swimming background other than knowing how to swim from Red Cross, Boy Scouts etc. My goal was to do a 59 and attained that in June of 2005. Can't seem to get below that though, seem to be at 60-61 every time since.
:applaud: I think it's all that running you used to do!
Why Poolraat, you must be looking at my 50 free times. I have never done a timed masters 100 free, except in practice. It always conflicts with some important fly/back event.
OK,
Poolraat proves it can be done.
I noticed the top ten times for 40-44 are around 50. Has anyone gotten will into the 50's after starting late in life?
Technique not withstanding, getting down close to a 50 would require too much training and serious coaching which I do not have. I basically train alone. I can only devote 60 minutes 5 days a week. I have a good swimmer keeping an eye on me and giving me some workouts, so this helps greatly.
Time will tell. If I can't get under 60 after two years of serious swimming, then I think approaching sub 55 will be very difficult.
I will get times in January.
It would be nice to hear from others who have gotten their times down in a short period of time.

I seem to recall MSwimming is some ace mid-to-distance swimming guy who is an unbelievable athletic anomaly being unduly modest.
I didn't swim, and I mean not at all, for over 24 years. After 4 months of training maybe 3-4x week of not that impressive yardage, I hopped in and swam a 26 in the 50 free. I'm 45 now, 44 then (last October). I had to learn how to do flip turns the right way and keep my goggles on. It can be done. I think it depends on the factors Ande set forth. I suspect MSwimming was a good athlete beforehand and was doing some other sport when he was young. Swimming under 50 when you're over 40 and haven't done it before is mindboggling. Work on getting under 1:00 first. That would be fantastic. Just keep at it. 5x week is a lot of training for a sprinter.
