Why more men?

Why are there more men than woman in masters swimming? Everyone says that women's events always end before the men's events (and thus we have to keep that odd/even rule for pools at nationals). Is this still true? The last meet I attended there were 62 heats of women and 65 of men.

  • Dennis: It is, I assure you, quite impossible to participate in competitive swimming if you are on bed rest, have persistent morning sickness or have other pregnancy complications. I'll also go out on a limb and say that children may make finding time to participate more difficult. I will second the pregnancy part! Many mornings I'd go to swim team not knowing if I'd be able to keep down my banana. I ended up on anti-nausea medicine just to be able to function. Pregnancy and morning sickness severly hindered my swimming for about 11 months (9 of pregnancy and 2 after) and the bed rest weeks before my due date didn't help. I am one who started swimming at age 5. I competed until 18 and then took a break. I went back at 29 after seeing my sister compete at Nationals (can't let my sister win, can I?!). During that time I was not having a family, though. I just had other interests (ballet, hand bells, new husband, etc). I wish women stuck with swimming more... Alison
