Breathless

I have been swimming in a pool and am able to swim 1 mile - very slow, but still able to accomplish this non stop after 3 times in the pool and have not had any problems breathing. I joined a Masters Class and all of a sudden I cannot catch or regulate my breathing. I find that after 75 or 100 yards into the warm up I have to stop and stablize my breathing. I am assuming that this is because I am now swimming with people and sharing lanes and letting myself get caught up in the feeling like I have to keep up. Have any of you experienced a similar phenomenon?

  • Yes. Swimming by yourself is very different than swimming with others. It is not necessarily a bad thing that you are having a little trouble keeping up. You shouldn't be terribly concerned about it. The idea is to improve even if it means that yesterday you did 75 yds comfortably and tomorrow you will do 100 yds comfortably. As long as your breathing technique is good, then it simply means that you are working harder and this hard work will be a great benefit to your overall fitness. It is important to use the clock to gauge how much harder you are working. See how long it takes to complete 75 or 100 yards when you swim by yourself vs. how long it takes to complete the same distance with your masters class. I would presume that you are swimming somewhat faster with your masters class.
