My Favorite Memory? - Do You have any?
Was it my first Marathon win swimming the Saguenay River from Chicotimi to Port Alfred?
Was it my first race when I was six years old getting a bronze medal?
Was it having a slice of bread with butter and brown sugar or bread with butter and tomato ketchup on it during the war when everything was rationed?
Dare I mention my wedding day with Chuckie?
The reason I brought this up, I had a slice of bread with butter with a teaspoon of brown sugar on it with my coffee 10 minutes ago and did it bring back memories.....
Chuck- I enjoy a slight variation. Toast with butter, then mix cinnamon and sugar and sprinke that on top.
An odd swimming memory. There was a 24 hour swim fund raising event at an indoor 25yd pool. You asked people to donate money for laps you did. The memory is that my friend and I went out for drinks from midnight to 2:00am. Then went to the pool and swam 16 x 500 Free at 2:00am in the morning. They also had the lights out so the only lighting was from the underwater lights in the pool which gave sort of a surreal feel to the swim. The shock of swimming 8000 when my body is used to 4000 was also unforgetable.
My first swimmeet...I was 8 years old and had stayed in the baby pool until my sister who was 2 years older was on the swim team...I said I wanted too swim in the meet too.. the coach said well you have too swim the length of the pool first ( mind you I had never been off the steps at this point )so I dove in and swam all the strokes for 25 yards and swam my first meet on my 8th birthday for the La Mesa Swim Team in 1965. Been swimming ever since.
This one, from the Hillsborough, NC scm meet last October: I swam the 400 free and achieved my goal of breaking 5:00 for the first time in over a quarter century. I split it well, and our coach (who really stresses negative splitting) was there to see it. But the best (and most memorable) part was seeing Fritz Lehman cheering me on from the side of the pool, jumping up and down like a madman. Anyone who claims that the "superteam" of NCMS is not a true team, take notice. Karen Duggan, are you listening?:p
Breaking five minutes in the 500 (4:58.94) at Hawaii SCY Nat's as a 52 year old.
- never got under 5:10 in college.
Have many other memories that are close.
