Coach scheduled a benchmark set tonight and today is the only day that I was going to get to bike-commute to work. I had planned to bike from my house, 17 miles each way, a vigorous ride w/ hills. A cold front blows in tonight for the rest of the week and I missed other days due to a staff meeting and recovering from weekend warrior syndrome. I really want to see if I'm swimming faster since the last benchmark set in November ... and doing bike+swim same day will skew results not to mention the time conflicts.
Why does Coach schedule these on the one day with the prettiest weather all week ?
We are doing the hour swim in two weeks. A week ago I was in the best shape I've been in since starting back swimming 2 years ago. Since last Monday (January 5) I've been so slammed at work that I haven't been able to get to the pool. I'm sure I've lost 50%+ of my cardio fitness in the last week. Dang, I coulda been a contender this year too! :bitching:
I've read where it takes 21 days to start losing cardio capacity so you should be ok.
I always thought you started losing it after a week, or even shorter. Maybe that's peak cardio fitness, which I'm sure I'm nowhere near in any event. In any event, I hope you're right! If I'm lucky, I'll get back into the groove tomorrow. Spent the night at the office last night. Hopefully today I can go home and get some sleep...
But heck... if your coach doesn't / or isn't able to schedule a make-up session for you and you really want to do it - get in a lap swim lane or find a small pool space and find a way to do it.
It was from the blocks, not a push. At our pool, spare lanes are always in the shallow end / no blocks when I can get there, and other pools I have access to don't have blocks or clocks or somebody to time me. So that would make it hard to compare with previous results. And my excuse wasn't going to cut it with my coach to schedule a makeup. :)
Topping my list of peeves are all of the excellent pools, most them built with tax dollars, that sit idle for many hours every day. Meanwhile, you have to pay 60, 70 bucks a month to swim masters and roll out bed in the middle of the night for oh-dark-thirty workouts because that's the only time they'll let you use the pool.
Triathletes who join a swim team to improve their racing and then refuse to do the workouts properly (using different strokes and speeds) or ignore technique instruction from the coaches (stretch out, DPS).
You wake up early to see if practice is canceled because of the weather (if schools are closed, no practice). You see that your county is fine... you get ready and go. You drive 30 minutes to get to the pool. When you get there, no one is around... wait 10 minutes - still not a soul. You drive back home and check again. They closed the schools the same time you left for practice. You even had the radio on and there were no reports.
=(
How about when Coach decides to cancel morning practice at 10pm but the weather front is late blowing in / conditions fine in the morning? And the school district started class on time this morning.
But at least I got to sleep in. :D Sounds like a telecommute-to-work day.
