I got in a rogue workout this morning! At 6 am I walked out of the locker room onto the pool deck. Observation #1: I was the only person there. Observation #2: there was quite a bit of standing water on the pool deck. Observation #3: one of the hot tubs was flooding over - thus the source of the water on the pool deck. Hmmmmm... was the pool closed? I didn't see anything posted... Observation #4: there was a piece of paper taped to the outside of the glass door to the pool area. I decided to get in and see if anyone chased me out. A few hundred yards later another guy came out of the locker room and hopped into the non-flooding hot tub. More guys emerged; eventually all the lanes were occupied. No women though... was something posted in the women's locker room but not the men's? No, by the end of my workout a couple women did appear and start swimming. On my way out I took a closer look at that piece of paper. It did indeed say "Temporary Pool Closure." Because of the layout of the place, the women were much more likely to notice that paper on the way to their locker room, so that's why there were fewer of them in the pool. If I encounter the same situation tomorrow morning, I'm following the same playbook... So were there any staff working there at all? You'd think someone should have noticed all of you swimming in the "closed" pool! Hope you get a swim in tomorrow :D

It's always nice when the pool schedule matches what is actually going on at the pool, but that doesn't seem to be the case in certain places. ...snip... I asked why that wasn't on the schedule, and he said it was because the lessons just started that day. Huh? As if nobody knew it was coming. I second that rant. I wanted to keep up my schedule when we took a few days away during my daughter's spring break. It just amazes me how many places have not even thought to check their online schedules to match their revised "recession" hours.

What I don't understand is when a swimmer that is new to Masters swimming ...snip... Then when the race goes they blow out a 26 second 50 free or so. C'mon man!! At least enter something like 30 seconds as a "guess" rather than NT if you can really do it. I agree, and I don't understand. I've not swum (swimmed, hat geschwummin...oh wait, that's a different thread :D) in a meet for years, but I want to make sure I'm in a heat where I've both got some competition and others to push me to better efforts. What scares me now is if I was wayyy to ambitious with my guesses for 100 back and 200 fr. I hope that doesn't load someone else's rant, "I just chaps my hide when someone guesses a seed time they have no hope of making!"

Got an extra, albeit shorter swim in yesterday while Smallfly had her session - should be a swim happy right? Except I left my suit in the shower overnight, so had to peel a very damp suit on again this morning.

Shared 4-man cubicles at work where I can't help but hear my co-worker making personal phonecalls to her husband. She said that he's a lazy crappy parent because he won't coach their son from the sidelines DURING all of the kid's soccer games/practices. The kid is 7 and the team already has good coaches that focus on fun and basic skills. She doesn't want her husband to volunteer as a team coach - she just wants her kid to have the benefit of his expertise and specifically not help the other kids. The dad is a talented player, the kid shows promise ... but he's still just 7. I thought my workplace was a safe haven from sports parent craziness.

    - people who can't circle swim - swimming with 20 trialthletes in wet suits (more funny than a rant) - parents who coach during practice (I'm a coach) - the big hairy bear - while thong bikinis are nice, they do not help me when I try to focus on my own workout

Please please please do us all a favor and when your speedos are see through get a new one or wear an extra drag suit. I don't want to see that... no one does... its just gross. I feel much better now! :)
  • Just getting angry that real life keeps getting in the way of swimming. Worst is I can't attend the Bumpy Jones Classic due to Little League commitments. :bitching:

Saw on the way back into the building the new pool schedule for the summer. The Masters swim offered at the fancy gym with the 50m pool that I'm using for free this month had changed from 2am + 3pm sessions to 3am + 2pm sessions. So I figured at $35 per month I could definitely justify the cost if going mornings only (I have been wavering for a while about 2 sessions for the $35) So I gets home and check the website and the monthly fee is now $60! That's like a 70% increase! Its almost as much as the monthly gym membership fee:bitching:
  • Can I rant for a minute about what happens when swimmers collide? This morning, the same dude hit my hand twice in the same spot. Dude, when you're prepping for the turn, MOVE TO THE RIGHT. While we're at it, move to the right any time you're sharing the lane! I had to stop in the middle of my 300 to yell the "f" word. (which did make it feel a little better.) But I was just thinking about how now, almost eight hours later, it still hurts like a mother. And then there was the time earlier this year that swam right into my head in the warm-down lane at a meet. A:censor:e didn't realize that he was pushing off the wall directly into oncoming traffic. He hit me so hard that I had to scratch the 1,000 because I was busy trying not to throw up in the ladies room. SWIM ON THE RIGHT! And then there was that time warming up in the diving well of a pool at a meet in March where another swimmer gave me a 2-foot long scratch right down my back and a head injury to boot. But we don't talk about that one as much, because maybe that was the time that I wasn't so much all the way over to the right as I could have been... Still, ouch.
