  • Today I had a stressful morning and didn't get out of the house at my usual time. By the time things had settled down I decided to just work at home for awhile, have lunch and then go teach my afternoon class. When I got to the University it was about 1:10. I realized, "hey, the pool doesn't close until 2:00, I can get in a short workout and still have plenty of time before my 3:00 class. I hit the water 1:20-ish and did a 600 wu. I looked at the clock and saw that it was before 1:30. I thought, "this is great, I have time for a 2000 yd set and even a little warmdown!" So I started to do repeat 200s, intending to do 10, then an ez 100 or so. As the set goes on I start feeling better and I'm really getting into it. As I touch the wall at the end of #9 I feel a wack on my head. At first I am confused. I didn't hit the wall, what is going on? Then I realize that one of the guards has wacked me on the head with a kickboard. He tells me, "We are clearing the pool for the swim team." I reply, "yea, at 2 O'clock right?" He says, "It is time to get out, the swim team has the pool." I look at the clock on the wall, It is 1:54 or 1:55. I say, "In like 5 minutes right? At 2 O'clock." I point at the clock. He tells me that the clock is wrong. I realize it is futile to argue the point and get out. It was very unsettling to be stopped so abruptly in the middle of an intense set. I was actually shaking a little. I was better after my shower, but it left me feeling unsettled. Oh well, it was a lot better than the zero workout that I was expecting after this morning. Next time if I am going to swim near closing time, I had better verify with the guards that the clock is right!
