Thanks all for your advice. I'm taking the path of least resistance by just getting out of there and never coming back. There's a great facility with two 50m pools (one indoor, one outdoor) a little further away - I did not consider it seriously before as I only took up swimming a few months ago and at the time the indoor pool was heavily booked out (it still is, most days) and I thought I'd be too much of a wimp to swim in the outdoor pool. I also thought I would lift regularly (hence the gym membership), but that didn't happen - weight lifting makes me too tired and I tend to skip swimming, which is not a good thing.
Now that I've learned my lesson, I'm slowly migrating to this new pool complex, swimming there once a week. They've got a great casual rate and it will be cheaper swimming there in the long term. The current weather also does a world of good to my underwater dolphin kick, as I tend to practice it as much as I can when I'm swimming in the new outdoor pool, as it's mid-winter here in Melbourne and limbs sticking out above water immediately freeze :).
