I am looking for a good pair of worthy goggles for open water races. I was looking at the Aqua Sphere Kaiman goggles. Anyone use these? do you like them? What are your favorite type/brand of goggles to wear for open water swims? Thanks in advance for your input.
  • I just use my pool goggles. No need to buy special ones.

What ever goggle you decide to use, be sure that they are made of polycarbonate, which is very effective at blocking UV rays. Many of the other plastics used in goggles do not block UV very much. A really bad combination is a dark pair of goggles that does not block UV - the darkness allows the eye to open up more and the UV rays can go right in and do even more damage. If you need corrective goggles, I highly recommend the ones from Water Gear - they are polycarbonate, can be had in a smoke color, have silicone (read "indestructable") gaskets & straps and have anti-fogging coating that works if it is taken care of properly. Not sure if they make non-corrective goggles. Oh yes: Sunscreen. Use it! Highly recommended: Bullfrog Superblock 45 or Blue Lizard. -LBJ
