The USMS discussion board is not just about professional or competitive swimming –it’s for anyone interested in engaging in a rather unique athletic activity.
Unfortunately, swimming is not a popular sport (it has only 93,300,000 sites on the net compared with 261,000,000 for football, and 155,000,000 for basketball) and except for the Olympics, there’s hardly anything about it in the mainstream news either.
However, there are actually 100's of millions (if not a couple billion) swimmers, so I would guess that most of those visiting the USMS (and other similar sites) would be classified as recreational swimmers, -IE- everyday people such as office professionals, scientists and engineers, and blue collar workers, high school and college students, etc.
I work in engineering (although very interesting work, it is rather solitude and lonely at times). However, I love swimming for the benefits of a recreational athletic activity (a change of pace from my job and the increased opportunity for social interaction) rather than for any competitive reason.
Happy Swimming!
