Hello all. I started swimming for the first time in my life about a year and a half ago. As such I am very slow, but that is ok with me. I recently swam in my first masters meet and it was a lot of fun. I however need some suggestions on type of suit. I currently wear a baggy recreational suit, and my coach says time to upgrade. Since I have lost 70 pounds in the last year, (but still have all the skin) a speedo is out of the question, what I need is a comfortable but yet snugger fitting suit. Maybe just a better recretional suit? Your suggestions appreciated.
What other people wear to swim is irrelevant. As someone who has just begun swimming as an adult, you should not be wearing a baggy or drag suit for practice (and certainly not meets) because it can affect your body position in the water. You want to be able to focus on mastering proper technique, not compensating for extra drag around your hips. That being said, you should be training in a well-fit brief or jammer (get polyester for durability) depending upon your preference for "coverage." In meets you could try a shoulder to knee technical suit (by any manufacturer) for the added adrenaline rush of feeling sleeker in the water.
