I go way back with this one. What a giant in the swim coaching field. I was lucky enough to see Mr. Haines several years ago in good shape sitting with Nort Thorton and Richard Quick. We all sat and chatted for about an hour. I go back to 1955 with him and never called him George he was always Coach or Mr. Haines to me. A truely great man.
Me too. I swam in Sacramento in the early 1960's and George Haines of Santa Clara and Sherm Chevoor of Arden Hills (unfortunatley, I didn't swim for him) were the two coaching giants of that era..... It's sad that the swimming community doesn't seem to have much of a sense of history; I mentioned something about Debbie Meyer to younger swimmers (even those who swam in college....and are really good swimmers) and I got blank looks. She and Donna DeVerona....and Chris Von Saltza were really awesome swimmers in their day....and would have continued to be awesome swimmers if they had had the option to swim in college....I can't believe that no one remembers them...(well, that's not true for Donna, since she has done a lot of sports commentating over the years...and remained really active....but no one remembers her swimming...just that she WAS a swimmer...)..... Maybe the re-vitalization of the Hall of Fame can help with these gaps in history.
I didn't know George Haines....but I knew OF him....he was a true giant in the sport.
